One Knob Big Muff

Request.  This is a One Knob Big Muff based on Joe Gagan's schematic and values. It makes sense in a lot of ways because many people dime the gain controls anyway, but you may want to experiment with the 39K and 47n from Q3 collector to Q4 base to get the tone setting the way you want it.  As usual socket and experiment.

  1. Either D1 or D2 needs flipping :)

The mids switch you often feature in Muff layouts would be a nice addition for a couple extra options without any further complication of a straight forward pedal. Left hand side of third and fifth row would be the points of connection if I'm not mistaken?

Great one this one, might have to build myself one, love Muffs and love simplicity!

    1. Ha, how did I manage that with the diodes?!

It's simplified from the usual Big Muff tone control though and so you're not going to get the same control over the mids like with the usual switching I include. You could still add a switch but you're only going to change the cut off frequency of the RC filter and so affect highs or lows.

  3. Verified! I've been meaning to build another Muff for a while seeing as my first attempt wasn't very 'gainy', also I hate wiring pots so this was a match made in heaven, thanks Mark. Using the stock values for the 38k and the 47nf gives a very usable tone but I socketed them so I think I'll tweak it a little, it may need nudging towards the treble for anyone that uses humbuckers, it also cleans up very nicely with the guitar's volume knob, if you're wondering if you'll miss the 'sustain' knob after building this - you won't. The One Knob Big Muff (Big Knob One Muff?) is the future.

  4. I'd like to put a 6 pos rotary switch in place of the sustain pot and I've been messing around with the 100k to ground on Q1's collector...Tried 1k for the lowest gain setting but on hard guitar hits it farts out. The rotary switch has two poles so I can put any other component on there as well. How about that 39k input resistor? I want that switch to have a good stepped gain travel. Thanks!

  5. I'd love to see a SUF "2247" Ram's Head layout...

    1. This is the schematic:

You just have to swap resistor & vaps values, as the layout is just the same.

  7. You're welcome :)

I forgot to tell that you should use one of the other layouts published by Mark about Big Muffs, as this one (the One Knob one) lacks two pots.

Jus another point: As you can see on the schematics, the original Ram's head, didn't have the 100uf filtering cap nor the +9v input diode..... but also lacked a DC Jack, so it's your choice :)

  11. Hi Guys....

Could I switch the diodes for 1n4001...I only have 3 1n914?

Also I am missing a 330nf cap could I put the closest I have...what would be better a value or lower? And Lastly I am missing the 39k resistor...would a 33k cause any problems..

Again thanks in advance.....for The help

    1. hi dodger. 1n4001 will work but i can be sure about how that will change the tone.but the'll work!
there is space to solder some capasitors in parallel next to that 330nf, so you can reach this value.you can put 3x100nf,or220nf+100nf or...
33k would be ok (maybe it'll make it a little more lound?not sure again..sorry!).. but you can also connect in sieries a 33k+an other small resistor you have to reach that 39k.

  12. Hi Mate..Thanks for the help.........I see what your saying about putting the other cap in parallel....Doh........

Thanks Mate I am just a beginner so I appreciate all the help...
