Top Gear Fuzz = Guild Grizzly

Couple of small circuits to keep you occupied on this sunday.. :)

This one's yet another Fuzz Face, but both boxes using the circuit are quite cool things..

  1. 220R Lin?! I have some 500r pots. Any advice on what to do with that?
22k could be 25k without too much trouble, right?

    1. Those are the values of the original. 200R would probably be perfect. Don't see why 500R wouldn't work well there too as that is the value used a lot in older fuzz face derivatives.

For volume, 20K, 25K and 50K would probably be all ok.

I managed to build this one, I am getting a nice fuzz tone, but too low volume. All max-ed is below unity.
the 220R pot had me scratching my head for some time, but then I wired parallel 330r resistor to 1k pot and got pretty near. (I think...still new to this)

here is the initial test with both pots to max.

    1. I have build this one twice, unfortunately I cant call it verified it does produce nice compressed and a bit gated fuzz, but the volume levels are very low.

    2. I'm quite convinced with the layout. Sumptoms may be because of the transistors.. You could try tweaking the values of 10K and 18K until it sounds right.

    3. I have tried 3-4 different sets of transistors, BC109 and BC169.
      I get these voltages.

      E - 0 /0.73
      B - 0.61/1.34
      C - 1.35/5.36

Other thing I tried is to boost the signal in front (with powerboost pedal) that seams to get the volume to better level, but at some point the sound gets chopped up and not very pleasant.

I will leave this one to be verified by someone with more experience than me. I don't exclude the possibility that I messed up twice in the same way.

  3. try lower gain transistors. in some fuzz circuits, they make the overall circuit louder, for some reason.

  4. I just built this one, and it seems to be working just fine for me. I'd say tag it. I used some pretty low gain (around 215hfe) bc337's with a 500r for boost and a 25k for volume. I might play around with some other transistors just for kicks, but it sounds pretty good as is
