Layout Updated! Connected 10K resistor from Bass 1 to Ground instead of Vb.

ReplyDeleteAye man, best way is to get you multimeter and put it to the legs of the trimmer and tweak til it registers around that voltage. As its only one trimmer, you can do it by ear if you dont have a multimeter, just stop tweaking the trimmer when your happy with the sound. A quick google search will provide you with a more indepth answer, and i believe over at the fsb (freestompboxes) forum there are guides to help newcomers in all manner of area.

ReplyDeleteThe FET is output recovery. Have you tried tweaking the trimmer by ear? Is your JFET good?

I have, i know it got louder a bit. I havent had time to try anything else tho. But i did have a quick look at the schem on the fsb and i did see some diff values in the large uf (polarised??) caps. 10, 47uf and here 22, 100 uf.
Delete10uF and 47uF are just there for power filtering. I've increased them just to avoid noise. They won't influence anything else. I've seen some videos around (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tpTFlFv3Yc8) and it doesn't seem to have an excessive amount of volume. I haven't built it myself. When does yours reach unity?

DeleteI have built this and seem to have an issue with the bass pot. It seems to be acting like a volume and bass pot. If i turn it fully CCW the volume decreases to nothing and fully CW it sounds full volume and pretty good. Been over the board several times and all seems fine. Joseph/Jesse are you getting the same thing with the bass pot?
ReplyDeleteJust looked over the schematic and with my limited skills managed to work out all seems correct with the 50k trim replacing the 15k to V+ to J201s drain. Slowly learning. Maybe the schematic is incomplete? Manfred did mention an internal PCB layer.

DeleteAs the Manfred's schematic and the layout is, there is half of supply voltage present at the FET gate, which could be the cause of your issue. Could you try to desolder the lower lead of that 10K coming from bass lug 1 (next to D2) and solder it back to ground strip instead of the original VREF? This could possibly solve it.

Changed that and its now good to rock. Nice spot Miro. Think you can now call this verified!

DeleteThe FET should be able to boost it a lot. Is your J201 good? Have you tried biasing it by ear? Can you try 2N5457 or MPF102 in there instead?

Its more when you turn the volume pot down the volume drops too quickly, maybe it needs a linear pot, as that's what seems to be in the original looking at the pics. I'll quickly change it and get back to you in five.
DeleteOk, linear pot for volume works better, sweeps way more even. I'll try some other FETs tomorrow. Have already tried both through hole and SMD j201s with only very minor differences. I'll report back if i find anything. Thanks for the help Miro.
DeleteYup. You are correct. The volume pot is definitely B100K on the pics - and the schematic.
DeleteAlex will most likely fix the 10K resistor to ground and B100K for the volume once he sees these comments.

ReplyDeleteYes, you are correct. If you follow it, you see that 1 side traces back to 9v, the other side connects to the wire that goes to the LED+. For regular LED's I go for 2.7K usually.

I tried rev log but it was worse, than 500k log (i don't have 1M) and it's perfect, so for me it's definitely a log pot for the treble. I'll keep 500k (pedal seemed a bit quieter than with 1M)

Anyone have the problem with the bass knob?

The bass potentiometer, is acting as level, this is normal?
