Fromel Death is Gain

Info about the original:

Death is Gain - Low to Medium Gain Overdrive.  This pedal is an articulate overdrive that is very responsive to pick attack and playing dynamics. The controls and circuit on this pedal are familiar, but the end result is anything but.

For starters, there is no mid-hump and the tone control is usable and musical at all settings.  When cranked, the pedal has a rich, creamy tone that hits you in the gut with tight, full bass response.  “Death is Gain” also works especially well for filling out single note passages and stacks well with other drives and boosts.  Every guitar has a sweet spot that can be dialed in by the pedal’s gain control, where light picking will be clean and bell-like, while playing hard will produce overdriven bliss.  From mild, dynamic gain to moderate crunch, “Death is Gain” will take you to tone heaven!

  1. Is this some kind of Tube Screamer mod with no buffers?

    1. Yup. Differences include 4 diodes in the clipping stack, a bit more gain, and a revoiced tone stack.

  2. Wow, the description makes it sound like the ultimate bass drive! In all honesty it's pretty cool, I may have to try this one at some point.

  3. I've just verified that this works and sounds good. Better than a normal TS. I've notified Miro but gain is reversed and should be 1 and 2&3.

    1. No connection. You could connect it to 2 if you want to, but it isn't necessary and wasn't done in the original.

    1. Yup. Basically all off the dual opamps will work just fine. Some of them will sound a bit different from the others, but all should work. In addition to JRC4558, you could try TL062, TL082, JRC4580, NE5532, LM358, TLC2262, OPA275, OPA2604 and so on...

    2. I wish there was a way to test different opamps with a flick of a switch. You know, if you want to hear the difference between TL072 and JRC4558 or something. Swapping out the chips takes too long!

    3. You could, just use a 6 pole 2 position rotary switch. 9V and Ground can be always connected and commoned, then just switch the inputs and outputs. Or even a momentary 6 pole double throw switch list these, then you could switch them over even more quickly.

    4. Cool! Thanks Mark, I'm definitely gonna have a though about it. I'm sure people would find it cool to switch between two opamps.. you know.. just because.. sounds cool and all hah!

  6. I finished the pedal... But it will not work at all!

If you play super hard it will barely come through but when it does its very crackly. Its weird.

Any suggestion on what the problem could be? I have tested everything but I just think something is not placed right. Does anyone have pictures of their build on this layout?

    Thanks!

  8. I think it sounds great, but the tone knob is a little strange; all the treble comes in the last 5-10 %. Anybody tried another value of the tone pot?

    1. Same here. Anyone got a schematic or an original unit? I stuck a 10k R from 1 to 3 on the tone pot and definitely got more usable range.
