Take 3. D*A*M Ram Head -> Emanating Fist Electronics XB-70
-> Emanating Fist Electronics Dope Priest. Same shit just a little
more refined with an air of maturity, if the Ram Head was a bottle of
Jim Beam the Priest is a bottle of Wild Turkey. As with the XB-70 the
core circuit influence here is my slowly decaying 1977 Guild Foxey Lady
though this time the circuit blue print is tailored to my own ears and
tastes rather than just replication. I've taken some influence from V3
Sovteks and the Triangle Muffs, basically lowered background noise,
tighter projection and greater ability to cut through dense frequencies.
It ain't no reinvention of the wheel just the delivery of sounds that I
dig in regards to this circuit type presented in way that appeals to me
more than our past incarnations.

D5 is marked but not listed as to what it is, there are 2 listings D1-D4 as 1n914 and a D1 as 1n5187?
ReplyDeleteyea is 1n5187. it's mislabled at the bottom as D1. i'll correct the layout.
DeleteBuilt and using 2n5088's in sockets for the moment. The original uses BC549C's Thank you so much!
ReplyDeleteAnd it just really came alive using 2n5089's I'll try to get a hold of a quartet of BC549C's (like the original) or BC550C's.
DeleteAwesome! Is there a schematic available? Didnt find it on FSB.
ReplyDeleteThere isn't. It's just s big muff with some value differences. Worked on it from gutshots.
DeleteAwesome. Thanks for posting that layout. High on the "to-build" list.
ReplyDeleteBuilt and sounds good. The BMP tone-stack on this one is quite nice. Lots of usable area in the EQ control.
ReplyDeleteOriginal unit seems to be using BC549C trannies.
ReplyDelete"Offering unrivalled midrange projection with total clarity the Dope Priest features highly articulate dynamics for such and intense distortion device. The four stage circuit is carefully tuned with a gain selected quartet of BC549C's, selected for their sonic similarities to the obsolete BC239C."
yep. just figured not everyone would have BC549C's laying around. i'll change the notes though since it's been mentioned multiple times.
DeleteFired up first try. Used 2N5089's, sounds great to me. Thanks for the layout!
ReplyDeleteApologies if this is a dumb question, the 100uF Electrolytic, is the negative leg going to ground? I can see lil (-) symbols on the 1uF's. But not on the 100.
ReplyDeleteWhile I'm asking potentially dumb questions, Mids switch; is that a DPDT (on/on/on)? SW1 is coming from the board to the switch, the switch to Tone 3 is that going to Tone 3 on the pot? That's not the Tone 3 from the Vero board is it?
Appreciate the advice thanks everyone.
Yes 100uf negative is going to ground. The DPDT is an on/off/on 3 way toggle. And you can wire tone 3 to either the pot or the board, whichever is most convenient- id probably double up at the pot (wire tone 3 from board to pot and from toggle to pot) as its pretty easy and will be more hidden when you box it up.
DeleteI just want to chime in and say I built this with BC549Cs and its quickly becoming my favourite fuzz
ReplyDeleteIt sounds really raw compared to the russian/ic/black style ones id built before
I'd really highly recommend this one
Is it me or are both these layouts in low res I can't read them. Am i missing something here? Really interested in making this pedal so some help would be greatly appreciated. Such a cool site :)

DeleteI built this a while back with some hot 2n3904 transistors I got from Tayda that measured 427hfe. It's got a real raw midrangey sound that I was not expecting. The combination of the lower gain stages with the 1uf clipping caps seems pretty unique. It's a totally different beast compared to a Russian or a Ram's Head.
