Ibanez NB-10 Noise Buster

Original info:
Unlike conventional noise gates, the IBANEZ NB 10 Noise Buster is capable of cutting out noise not only while there is no signal flow, but during actual playing as well, thus providing far more effective noise reduction. A FREQUENCY control lets the musician eliminate noise components without impairing the envelope or sustain of the original sound. With the NB10, players are liberated from the adverse influence of stage lighting or single coil pick-ups on their music, and high gain distortion effects can be used without having to worry about noise.

Ibanez BB9 Bottom Booster

Here we go with one of my personal favourites. To me, the sound is simply amazing. As Dirk's notes on the schematic suggest, you won't be saving any money by building this. New ones sell for pretty cheap and one should be able to score a used one for a very decent price. I still wanted to see how compact i could possibly get this and yes, i'm rather happy with the results. I did cut a few corners though. I omitted the six 100n power decoupling caps from each opamp as adding those would have made this way bigger (let's just hope this doesn't add to noise floor). The input resistor is 12k on this layout, but to make it verbatim, you should take 5k1 and 6k1 resistors in series in its place - or a value of 11k2. I also dropped the 100k resistor and 47p cap from the output. If you want to add those, just solder them between lugs 1 & 2 of the Level pot. I also made a couple of small changes to the power supply section input. I burned the LT1044 on my original unit, and that was way easy to do. So i added series protection and a zener+100R resistor after that. Should be pretty fool proof like this. Charge pump produces +9V/-9V swing, so you're safe with your 16V rated electrolythic caps. Should be a nice fit for 1590B.

Ibanez SD9M Sonic Distortion Mod

There are two dual opamps, and one half of the other is completely unused in the original. So i used the remaining half as a buffer for the reference voltage. D1 and D2 are your clipping diodes. Should be easy enough to add a third switch to act as a diode clipping switch.

Ibanez TS808 with Bass Control

Request.  This layout adds a Timmy type bass control to the TS808 (but with the lugs swapped round so bass increases as you turn clockwise) .  I could have just added this to the existing TS808 post but think it's worth separating them to show two distinct build options.  I managed to shift things around so that the board ended up exactly the same size as the 3 knob version so there is no board size compromise if you prefer the extra tone control.

It may be worth experimenting the the 220n and 220R filter at Tone 2 so the Bass and Tone pots compliment each other to your liking.




And for those who really like the Timmy, this version uses both the Timmy Bass and Treble controls.

Ibanez Standard Fuzz

No way we're going to beat last year's number of layout posts :) We might break the verified 600 before new years though :)

Since i was up for taking on the big fuzzes.. Here's another vintage fuzz with up octave overtones. The layout turned pretty neat with some symmetry in there, but it'll once again eat up your 10µ cap supply :) Original has no polarity protection nor filter cap, so you should think about adding those yourself. The first gain stage with SK30A FET is per original, but instead the BCE pinout of the 2SC1815 used in the original, i drew the other transistors to match the pinout of your standard 2N2222 (and similar). Anything with relatively high hFE will work fine. BC550, 2N3904 MPSA18 and so on. Reportedly, lowish hFE gain transistor would work the best here. Try any Si NPN, you might get the best result with hFEs around 200. Just mind the pinout. I also left the clipping diodes on the edge of the board so one can take them easily on a switch and have his (or hers) way with them. Maybe a three position switch with LEDs, Germaniums and a diode lift in the middle? Tone change switch can be either a toggle or a stomp, which way you prefer it. If you want, you can omit the small link and the cuts from the bottom right off the board and wire the switch lug 2 directly to balance pot's lug 3.

Ibanez CR5 Crunchy Rhythm


As requested. I happen to have an original unit in metal enclosure, and to my ears this is definitely one of the greatest Ibanez overdrives. This layout is with your standard transistor pinout and with input buffer omitted. Reason for omitting the buffer is quite obvious... It is big, but should fit in B-box without an issue. Clipping diodes are placed so that one can easily add a switch for them. I would personally probably go with two red LEDs and two (or four) 1N60Ps.


Edit: There were a few errors on the layout (transistor labeling, vref via 1M to wrong input, HF tamer cap location and a vref via 100k to discrete opamp). All of those are now fixed and the current layout is verified. A/B'd this circuit with my original unit, and the differences between the two are minimal. Still one of the greatest Ibanez overdrives!

Ibanez FC10 Fatcat (layout v2)

Ok. As the original layout for this circuit was originally drawn from a bad schematic and altered later, i thought it would be a good idea to redraw this from a trusted (Dirk Hendrik's) schematic with original buffering in tact. I also removed the old one from the archives... As this Rat adaptation shares the original board with LM7 and BS10, those are on their way too.

A wide range of distortion sounds, a fat sound, and plenty of sustain characterize the Fat-Cat Distortion. Unlike typical overdrive units, when high gain settings are used, the fatness remains, allowing the FC10 to be equally effective on lead or rhythm guitar.

Like the TS10 and DS10, the FC10 gives extreme level boosts to incoming signals, creating an overdrive distortion effect. Enough gain is available to overdrive even weak signals, such as single-coil type guitars and low sustain/fest decay tones (bringing them up to a high sustain level).

To get the Fat-Cat "growling" distortion sound, turn the distortion control up high, while keeping the level control low enough to limit additional overdrive at the input of the amp. The tone control can be used to add harmonics for brightness and controlled feedback. High tone settings increase attack articulation, especially helpful on guitars with humbucking pickups.

Ibanez OD855 Overdrive II

Now. This is per the factory schematic, so it should (finally) be ok - don't go looking for the old defunct layout, as it is gone for good. Transistors are used for buffers, so i swapped the pinouts for your everyday devices. Tone pot is G-tapered 20K in the original, but linear should work fine in its place. Turned out pretty neat and still quite compact.

Ibanez MSL Metal Screamer

I think we've done all the Ibanez Tubescreamers now :P This one is a mix between TS10 and TS808 with slightly bigger cap for fatter bass responce.

There was an issue with the output buffer's vref connection, but that's fixed now...



Ibanez ST9 Super Tubescreamer

Very close to STL Super Tube. Clipping amp and mids boost section are in different order, plus some slight changes to the buffers.

Ibanez TS7 Tubescreamer

200th Overdrive layout!
I seem to be on the streak with Tubescreamers. This one also marks a special moment. In addition to this being 200th OD layout, i finally deciphered the original schematic which is very annoying to read (all 7-series schematics are). This one is also our first layout for the this series of pedals. The funniest thing about this particular schematic is - The "Hot mode" is pretty much what you get when you mod your TS9 to one of the well known specs. Original is still pretty cheap pedal. You should be able to get used one in decent condition for around 35€/£30/$40. Oh. Switch pin 6 is not connected.

The Ibanez Tone-Lok Series TS7 Tubescreamer Pedal is the world-famous original Tube Screamer overdrive, with something extra. A boost switch has been added for extra saturation at the touch of a button. Adjust your sound with the drive, tone, and level controls on the Tubescreamer.

Ibanez TS9DX Turbo Tube Screamer

This puppy is basically another TS9, but it has clipping and gain options on "mode" switch. Modes are TS9, +, Hot and Turbo. Latter one acts as a diode lift, but adds a lot of gain. The switch is 2P4T rotary. Original unit has 250K dual gang pot for gain, and for some reason it is wired in series. So the 500K pot in its place makes this slightly simpler and the end result should be exactly the same. This sized board with a rotary switch will make it quite challenging to fit it in 1590B..

I scream, you scream, we all scream for the Tube Screamer. Pedals just don't get more legendary than this one, they don't. And if you're a fan of that classic overdriven tone used by... oh, well, just about EVERYONE who matters... there should be one mainstay in your pedalboard: this green-clad baby. The TS9DX gives you all the overdriven crunch, tube vibe, and smooth sustain that your tone has been asking for. And, in fact, with the TS9DX you have even more tonal options than the original. That's because the TS9DX is a special Tube Screamer reissue, loaded up with extra low-end crunch as well as "+", "Hot", and "Turbo" modes. It's like giving your guitar tone a swift kick in the face. A good kick in the face. The kind that makes you want more, and more, and more. 



Ibanez TS5 Tube Screamer


Hehee! Couldn't help myself. It is in reality a TS9 :) If you want it 1:1, then use TA75558 and 2SC1815 transistors (mind the pinout!). You could of course build it with JRC4558D and check the output resistors to make it 808.. I still thought we needed at least one more Soundtank to our library.

The same basic circuitry as the famed TS9 Tube Screamer in a more economical format (the TS9 has a more expensive housing and its handwiring makes it more labor intensive to build than the TS5). Most people can't hear the difference between the our affordable Soundtank Tubescreamer and the more expensive originals. Are you one of the few who can?-why not find out for yourself.

Ibanez STL Super Tube

Doron! I think you meant this one and not the MSL :P

To add a few words, the clipping diodes are placed neatly where you can easily take them on the switch and have your way with them. I would probably go with three position two pole switch and have the middle as diode lift, other end as four 1N4148s (two in series and two of those in parallel for more volume) and other with 2 or 4 1N4001s or LEDs.

Edit 31.7.2016 - There was still one crucial error on the layout, which made the board defunct. Fixed and tweaked a few things around to accomodate the polarity protection etc. *Should* finally be safe to build.

Ibanez CM5 Classic Metal

Got the original yesterday and it didn't disappoint. Soundwise. The box is what you'd expect and the stompswitch is out of order, so no surprise there. Ibanez's old cheapo high gain distortion that is articulate and powerful without being mushy or too noisy. Well worth a second look.

This layout omits the in/out buffers and the transistors pinout is made to match your common transistors. Original has 2SC1815s in it, so you could use those too. Just mind the pinout. I would strongly suggest that you try on different transistors and different diodes for the clipping pair. Although this is really nice sounding circuit, i see no harm in modding it slightly to suit your preferences and/or needs.
