Keeley Magnetic Echo

"The Mag-Echo pedal simulates tube tape echo sounds by using the delay circuit and a little bit of modulation.  Tape echos have long been regarded as a warm and very guitar friendly form of delay.  The Mag-Echo achieves similar results by using a touch of Lo-Fi delay, a slightly filtered echo response to keep things warm, and some modulation.  Modulation, or “Wow and Flutter” in the tape world is a slight pitch shift or wavering that occurs as the tape is pulled across the heads.  The modulation we use is similar to what we use in our Seafoam Chorus, a slight wavering of pitch on the trails of the repeats.  With a simple set of controls for the delay – Time, Regen, and Level and with the “Wow and Flutter” controls – Depth and Rate you can create some very vintage or rather unique tones"

Earthquaker Disaster Transport Jr

Had a sleepless night, so I decided to knockout some new layouts before the end of the new year. This one kicked my ass a bit, but I got it as small as I could. a nice sounding delay, that's similar in architecture to the Deep Blue Delay. It's a nice sounding warm, natural delay.

The Disaster Transport JR is an analog voiced digital delay with 625ms delay time with an all analog dry signal path and true bypass switching. It was designed as an anti-modern delay for those who appreciate a nice vintage tape echo with all it’s peculiarities. Its unique tone control doubles as a noise filter on longer delay settings and really helps the delay shine with a dirty signal. The mix control allows you to boost the effected signal to nearly 4x the original signal level and the repeats control goes from one signal repeat to near infinite repeats all the way through to self oscillation.

Controls
Mix: Sets the output level of the effected signal. This should be treated as a gain control/master volume for the delay line. Unity is around noon and everything above noon will boost the delayed signal louder than the original. This is a gain control so, like any pedal with a lot of gain, a hint of noise and distortion at max setting is completely normal.

Tone: Most delay pedals are heavily filtered at the output to remove the clock noise and other unwanted hash that is common from extending the range of the delay time beyond the limit of the circuitry. This usually leaves the delay sounding dark, muddy and disappear when hitting it with dirt. The Disaster Transport has done away with a lot of the heavy filtering and replaced it with a tone control which allows the user to choose their desired sound and results in more natural tape-like repeats. The tone control is at it’s darkest fully counter clockwise and brightens as you turn it clockwise. A good rule of thumb is to leave the tone control between off (fully counter clockwise) and noon at longer delay times. This will remove all the common noise from hyper-extending the circuit.

Time: From about 30ms fully counter clockwise to about 625ms fully clockwise.
Repeats: Sets the regeneration of the delay line. From one single repeat fully counter clockwise, subtle repeats around 9 O’clock, strong naturally decaying repeats at noon, near infinite repeats around 2 O’clock and full on self oscillation fully clock- wise.

Tails:

A version of this pedal was requested with tails, so I took a look at the Deep Blue Delay, which this is based off of, and made the same modifications.  To have tails, you don't use a 3PDT switch and the usual stomp switch wiring, you're going to use a DPDT switch  with the input and output wires going directly to the sockets.  With tails the stomp here will cut new signal going into the PT2399 and so when bypassed the output of the PT2399 will continue repeating with the last input it received and the repeats continue, and IC1 will then act as a buffered bypass.  You may want to to swap the 47K resistor at pin 7 of IC1 for a 50K trimmer so you can adjust the buffered bypass level so you can have to perfect unity with your bypassed signal.  Another alternative is that you can add a second stomp to true bypass the whole thing  which will give you the option to mechanically bypass the effect as usual, or simply bypass with tails when you want.

Madbean Cave Dweller (2015)

The Cave Dweller 2015is a total re-design of the Cave Dweller project from 2012.
While the original Cave Dweller was a simple and colorful sounding delay it had a few drawbacks;

it was pretty lo-fi, and darkened the dry guitar tone somewhat. This was due to the limitation of using only the PT2399 for both dry signal and delay signal processing. The objectives for the re-design were to improve the quality of delay and dry guitar signal without requiring as many parts as a full-fledged delay circuit such as the MBP ZP Micro. This is accomplished by introducing a new input stage for dry signal processing and also by adding additional filtering to the delay signal. The result remains fairly low in parts count without compromising on the delay tone.

Here's a variation on the deep blue delay; two PT2399 chips and a current mirror delay pot give around 2200ms delay, although beyond 700ms gets pretty lo-fi. There are two points where a momentary SPST can be used: Either to briefly connect the input to the delay input on select phrases (dub mode), or to bypass the repeats feedback resistor for self-oscillation on demand.

Triton Delay

"The Triton Delay is yet another PT2399-­‐‑based delay circuit that, at its tonal and topological core, is substantially similar to the Rebote 2.5 by Tonepad. TheTriton, however, diverges from the base concept by adding a second Delay Time potentiometer and a unique (in the DIY world) modulation effect. The Delay pots are selectable via footswitch (latching), and when switching from one time setting to the other, the delay time change happens slowly, just as if you were manually turning the delay time pot on a standard delay pedal. This causes a gradual pitchbend that slowly resolves to unison if a note or chord is struck and held when toggling between Delay pots. To control the speed of the pitch bend/resolve, there is a pot labelled “Slow”. Making the transition speed slower also makes overall delay time longer. It’s a very interactive system."

Madbean Cave Dweller II Dub Edition

As requested, version 2 of the Cave Dweller with all noted mods included.

Cave Dweller II (“Dub Ed.”) expands upon the underlying design of CDI , but adds an additional PT2399 for roughly twice the delay time. It also combines the two feedback controls into one. An additional mod has been included if you wish to add a true Mix control to Cave Dweller II.

Cave Dweller II Controls

Time – This sets the delay time.
Dwell – This control is a combined version of the Dwell and Echo controls of CD1 (thanks, Alex!)

Notes

Cave Dweller II - Dub. Edition - is for those really cavernous delay needs. It utilizes the current mirror set-up of the “DM-5” delay project to achieve roughly twice the delay time of CD1. The max delay time should yield about 1 sec, although a mod has been included to artificially reduce this, if desired.

In this version, Dwell and Echo are combined into one. The control works slightly differently than CD1. At minimum, the repeats are filtered on the opposite end of the spectrum, meaning they are more “telephonic”. This setting sounds very similar to the Deep Blue Delay. At max, the repeats are dark and ambient similar to the CD1.

One caveat with the combined control is that there is minimal influence on the number of repeats produced by the effect. For those builders who wish to add an additional Mix control to limit the number of repeats, a simple mod has been included. Please see the illustration below on how to implement the Mix control mod.

Additionally, the dark repeats have been limited to non-oscillating by using a larger value for R12 . If you do implement the Mix mod, you can lower the value of this resistor from 750k to a value between 470k and 560k to re-introduce oscillation. This is not recommended when not using the Mix mod.

One other mod has been included with R20 . This resistor resides in parallel with the Time control and allows you to reduce the max delay time of effect. This mod was included for those who prefer a cleaner delay (max delay times with PT2399s tend to introduce some digital artifacts and noise). The value can be selected to taste, and a 200k is suggested. This results in roughly 20% less delay. A 150k resistor yields approximately 25% less delay.

Madbean Cave Dweller

Nice sounding mini delay, designed by Madbean to fit in a 1590A box, and after checking with Javi this layout should fit in one too :o).  Tantalum caps or mini electros may be needed to keep things as compact as possible, and maybe a multi layer ceramic for the 1u.

The Cave Dweller I is a low parts count delay comprised of a single PT2399 chip and fitted for a 1590A enclosure. This ranks as a “mediumi-fi” type circuit, meaning that filtering of the PT2399 is kept at a minimum in favor of a small footprint. While you won’t get quite the fidelity of the Echo Base, for example, it still sounds very, very good and offers a somewhat unique flavor of delay. The effect takes advantage of the two on-board amps of the PT2399 for use as input and output mixers. The feedback and filtering are combined in a unique way which produces a slightly different set of controls than the typical PT2399 delay. This leads to some really “haunting” and musical repeats at long delay times.

CultureJam Neptune Delay

Another PT2399 delay from CJ.  An LDR with greater than 1M dark resistance and preferably less than 100K light resistance is recommended.  I put the resistors in between LDR and LED to add a bit of separation so you can get them facing each other more easily.  As usual with these, it's recommended that you tape LED and LDR together or use some heat shrink tubing so you can test the circuit without it needing to be boxed.

Here is my two cents thrown in to the bucket of PT2399-based delay circuits. It features aggressive low-pass filtering on the delay line to virtually eliminate the nasty artifacts that often plague PT2399 delays; and it also sports a momentary footswitch that modulates the delay time, allowing for some cool pitch-bending sounds and really funky detune effects. It can also be made to sound sort of like a lap steel (in a way).

The base of the circuit is derived from madbean's "Sea Urchin" circuit. Then cranked up the filtering and added the modulation footswitch.

Grind Customs FX DeProfundis Delay

Rej at Grind Customs FX is well known in the DIY community.  He designs some great effects, shares a lot of projects with us all and also sells some really excellent PCBs, the Chimaera in particular is extremely popular with those who want to build a Klon in a small box.  See the projects on his forum at http://www.grindcustomsfx.com/forum and check out his PCBs at http://www.grindcustomsfx.com.

This one in a very nice sounding delay based on the PT2399 IC and is definitely a recommended build.

Overview
The DeProfundis Delay is a PT2399 based digital delay with aggressively filtered repeats and the possibility of very long delay times (and minimal delay line noise). There is also a tone control trimmer to adjust the high pass cutoff frequency on the repeats. The stock values yield a max delay time of approximately 550ms - 600ms. With a minor modifications (see below), max delay time can be extended to almost 900ms.  

Tweaks & Modifications  

“Love You Long Time” - Extend the max delay time

This is a very easy modification. Change the Time pot to A100K and then add a 270K resistor in parallel with Time. You can add the resistor either to the pot pads on the board, or you can use the pads marked “M1” and “M2” (see below for more info on these). Adding the 270K resistor brings the Time pot’s total resistance value down to about 75K, which is about the limit of what this circuit can handle without getting noisy and producing synth like repeats (more resistance = more delay time). If you don’t have 270K on hand, try 220K, but be aware that this will give you less max delay time. Or you could put multiple resistors in series to get close to 270K.  

Even Darker Repeats 
If the dark and murky tone of the stock circuit does not satisfy your black heart, try increasing the value of C7 (Mark's note: 10n cap to ground under IC2) to taste.

This version is based on Rej's notes for increasing the maximum delay time.  Instead of putting a resistor in parallel with the Time pot I've used a multi-turn trimmer so you can set the maximum delay time exactly, to the point just before things starts getting a bit noisy. 




Here is the modulation daughterboard for those wanting to add it to the effect.  It is based on Rej's Portable LFO schematic and although it is designed for the DeProfundis, it would work equally well to add delay to other PT2399 based delay pedals such as the Deep Blue Delay.

The main modulation switch will be centre off, in one position you'll have modulated delay, in the other position you'll have modulation only.

The Shape switch will let you select a sin or square wave, and could if you prefer be swapped for a 500K linear pot which will sweep between the two waves and then give you the in between settings too.

The LED and LDR need to face each other, ideally tape them together or use heat shrink around them so you can try the circuit without it needing to be boxed first.  You'll need to experiment with LED type and colour etc and LDR type to see how it works for you, or maybe use a Vactrol for an integrated unit.

Magnus Modulus

With 8 knobs and 3 switches I really didn't need to keep the size of this one down, but it will fit in a 1590B if anyone is utterly insane :o)  You can shave off another column if you solder D1 and D2 in the same hole and move the 1u cap over to the left into the hole vacated by one of the diodes.  But there probably isn't much point in saving the space when it's going in a 1590BB (at least) anyway.

Another mod would be to make the bottom left 100u cap switchable to change the speed range available from the LFO, but I'll leave experimenting with that one up to you.

The Magnus Modulus is another PT2399 based DIY echo modulation effect pedal. I wanted to make a digital delay and liked the idea of adding modulation ala Echo Base. I decided to use a stage from the BYOC Ping Pong with the LFO from the Tremulus Lune for maximum modulation control.  I didn't reinvent the wheel here, just a bunch of other ideas put together into one awesome effect. 

The delay lengths are controlled via a voltage controlled oscillator in the PT2399 at pin 6. The nominal delay length is set by R9 and Delay Time pot. The modulation is coupled on top of this DC value via R10 and C13. There is no need for a variable resistor (transistor, LDR). While I had the LFO and buffers already on board I decided to add a tremolo coupled into the output amplifier stage with a J201 acting as a switch.

This project is intended as a DIY effect and hopefully an evolving one.  This is a highly modifiable circuit, hopefully you'll find the setup you like the most. The values in the schematic and layout are my personal favourites, your taste may differ so I'd suggest a few mods. The project fits in a 1590BB if you have skills

MODS: Delay filtering - I have a really hot bridge pickup in my Les Paul and it can make the delay section distort (I use both pickups and designed the pedal using the middle one, it sounds awesome) I increased the values of C11 and C18 to filter more of the highs. Capacitors you can play around with to change the filtering are: C5, C6, C11, C18.

I used 240k resistors in the LFO, the original has 220k, you can add a "Fine" rate control as well.

The tremolo could be inlplemented with an LDR, I used the J201 as it is pretty common. There is a bit of charge injection that is only really noticeable with the space (or smooth, can' t remember) knob is turned down, the tremolo sounds really good and smooth when that control is set properly though.

You can use less knobs, the gain knob could be a trimmer if you don't want a booster.  Taking out the limiting diodes will increase the output significantly during self-oscillation and is not recommended

Casper Electronics Echobender

Something weird to do with your extra PT2399s. From Casper Electronics :

The Echo Bender is a mix of multi FX pedal and noise maker.
It can process external signals like guitars, keyboards, mics and drum machines or it can create complex sounds on its own.

It can function in several different stand alone modes: 
-Warm analog sounding echo.
-Highly adjustable distortion.
-Ring mod style feedback.
-Complex noise generator.
-These modes can be used on their own or it can all be mixed together to achieve effects ranging from melodic and dreamy to chaotic and screamy.

The noise generating capabilities are especially interesting. The echo rate range has been set much lower than the standard echo pedal. When the rate is turned WAY down, the sound breaks up into blipping squeals and screeches. Combine this with distortion and feedback tones and a reverse decay setting and you’ve got a lot of variety and tonal complexity.

Rebote Delay

I will add the updated version as well at some point, but I wanted to include the original version first because I haven't seen a layout for it yet, and it's a nice option for someone who wants a simple two knob delay pedal which will easily fit in a 1590B.

Ersatz Verben psuedo reverb by culturejam

Designed by culturejam on FSB and CW, this is what he wrote:

Inspired by the Crap-Fi Delay by allesz, I decided to see if a similar simple circuit would work at lower delay times for reverb and slapback. It does.

Once the basic circuit was up and running, earthtones helped me refine it and make it much nicer. He's wicked smaht like that.

Delay time range is about 40ms up to about 140ms. As delay time is increased, more highs are rolled off by C4 (that was ETA's idea). So it's pretty much hiss/noise free no matter the delay time. 

He posted a demo here, and it sounds pretty good to me.  Something different to do with those PT2399s you've got.
