"The Mag-Echo pedal simulates tube tape echo sounds by using the delay circuit and a little bit of modulation. Tape echos have long been regarded as a warm and very guitar friendly form of delay. DeleteNot for input voltage. They are using D1 and D2 for TVS to quiet the signal for the repeats at pin 2. I had done some research on this about reducing noise. I have been designing my own delays with TVS diodes at repeat/feedback pin 2. I believe I had some across Keeley using clipping diodes as a method for noise reduction.

ReplyDeleteCheck, double check and triple check that all components/wires are correct and in the right place on the vero - only takes one row out to silence the build! Then check for solder bridges on the underside - run a knife in between each vero track underneath..

ReplyDeleteFor tails, looking at the schematic and how tails were added to other PT2399-based builds, I believe that the easiest way to add this capability is to perform this surgery:
Delete1. Make a cut on the top row at position 11, so halfway between the 1u cap and the 10K resistor, leaving an open pad on either side.
2. Add a wire from the top row, position 10, just to the right of the 1u cap, and attach it to pin 1 on your tails switch.
3. Add a wire from the top row, position 12, just to the left of the 10K resistor, and attach it to pin 2 of your tails switch
4. Connect pin 3 of the tails switch to ground.
When "bypassed" the input to the PT2399's input buffer will be grounded and allow the tails to fade-out. Follow the stomp-switch wiring guidelines for the Deep Blue delay or the Disaster Transport Jr.
The OPA 2134 will now be a unity gain buffer in your pedal chain, but it's a dead-quiet, high quality, op-amp, so a really good choice.
Has anyone successfully done this tails mod? Can't seem to get it to work.....

DeleteG'day Guys, I've finished this build and after finding a few silly mistakes, plus an odd situation where lug 3 of the speed pot was soldered to it's row but it wasn't making a connection with the rest of the row!??! It's fixed, up and running but I've got a couple of thing to ask about.

I'm using TL082s as I don't have the 2134 or the LM358.
With the B100k depth I was only all the modulation seemed to be bunched up at the end so I used a C10k and it is a lot better. I do have a C500k, would that be better or overkill? I don't have any C100k on hand.

ReplyDeleteGreat sounding for a PT2399. Amazing for how lo-fi the chip is. After a fix and a couple of tweaks I'm going to drill an enclosure for it. It should fit into a 125B just fine.
ReplyDeleteThe fix... I was getting only one repeat and the feedback/regen pot did nothing. The 1u cap that's the second down on the right side was in the 6th and 8th holes down instead of the 6th and 7th holes.
The tweaks... I used a 1K8 resistor in place of the 10K on column 18 to increase the repeat level to over unity. I used a TL072 instead of the 2134 because it works perfectly and it's way cheaper.
I twiddled with the gain trim and found it to affect the signal less than I expected. I set it for unity by ear. It's sitting at about 12:30 on mine.

ReplyDeleteBuilt it but having issue with the feedback. It seems to be permanently self oscillating (when you turn up feedback it'll swell out pretty much straight away with noise).
ReplyDeleteRest works as intended. Checked layout, values and tried different chips to no avail.
Maybe check the resistance in the oath to the feedback pot? Make sure the pot is wired the right way round
DeleteHave done. The level and feedback pots are only doing 0-50k for some reason rather than 100k. Checked paths, component values on the board still can't see anything off. Pots are wired correctly.
DeleteDone a signal probe to the schematic too. Clean signal passes the 2134 at pin 1, the 1u above it, and the next 10K. After that the signal starts to display eternal feedback/oscillation unless the pots off.
The voltages on the pt2399 and lm358 are fluctuating (LM358 a lot), they supposed to do that? Only ever build one other pedal before with a delay processor before so not sure if this is normal behaviour? Time, depth, speed sound all as I’d expect and LFO Led is dimming/brightening/flashing in line with the depth/speed pots. Time works too, It’s just the feedback, it’s work just if low but starts self oscillating noise until you turn it back off. Sounds a little gated too maybe?

Sorted I think. 47n was dead. Swapped it out and sorted by looks. Voltage fluctuations is the moderation, when it's turned off it stabilises.

Hello! I finished the building. I become signal when the pedal is in bypass mode. I am checking it with an audio probe, I become audio signal almost everywhere (including the 2399) but when I touch with the tip of the cap in the INPUT, then I don´t become any kind of signal. Any suggestion?

ReplyDeleteBuilt this, very clear sounding delay, loved it, but it has same problem as DBD - first repeat is distorted if you have a hot/active pickup.
Have an idea - can someone make a layout of this delay without modulation section, but with input / output available for inserting another effect to add, say, an octaver / phaser / etc. to repeats? Kinda fx-loop.
And yes, doubling up on the request above - can we get this with a tails mod?
