DOD FX70C Corrosion

 From America's Pedal:
DOD introduced the Corrosion distortion pedal (FX70C) in mid-1997. With basically the same circuit as the FX70 Metal X, the Corrosion featured a heavily oxidized metal finish and no paint except red (1997-98) or black (1999) graphics near the control knobs; the first version with red graphics appears to have been more rare. In 1999 the final version with black graphics was introduced, with the model name in a two-tone box to match the appearance of the final series of DOD pedals. However, the Corrosion did not use the same casing or switch, and may have been revived to profitably use up the last remaining second-series parts. It is unclear if either version of the Corrosion was ever featured in DOD advertising or catalogs, but because of its raw, unfinished appearance, sales were probably slower than the Metal X. The Corrosion was discontinued when production of all FX-series pedals officially shifted to China in late 1999.

DOD 210 FET Preamp

Surprised this one hasn't been done. A nice small and quick build, and should have lots of boost on tap and fatten up your tone nicely. Could be a good platform to mod to taste. Seems to be on the rare side to boot. Only video I could find was a DIY build that has some mods, but you get the idea.

DOD Carcosa Fuzz

Anders knocked out a layout for this a few days ago on the forum and beat me to it, but I still wanted to whip up a layout for the main page.

The DOD Carcosa Fuzz is a doorway into an alternate fuzz universe, where classic tones of legend coexist with splattered and shattered Pollock abstractions. Combining the Carcosa's wide-ranging AFTER bias control with two toggle positions creates tones that range from porcine fatness to dessicated shards. This versatility makes the Carcosa Fuzz a good companion for dirty or clean amps. True bypass, tons of output, and the visage of the King in Yellow sets the stage for fuzzy madness.
The DOD Carcosa Fuzz has an exaggerated mid-range and treble character that help it stand out in a mix. It has been designed to cut through a dense and heavy band but still have great note articulation with chords. However, when extreme bias (AFTER) ranges are selected many wild and over-the-top sounds are possible.

04/05 Layout Updated: LM358 pin 4 and the 18K resistor from the bottom LM13600 pin 9 were connected to V+ instead of ground.

DOD FX56 American Metal

I think Mark would have squeezed this in a bit more compact size, but i got it "down" to 21x29. So super brave folk may aim for 1590B, but rest of us may want to give this a go with 125B or 1590BB instead. Layout is based on a schematic which was provided with the original units, along with stickers and other paperwork. Circuit has some similarities with Boss HM-2 Heavy Metal as the youtube demo below suggests. Sounds pretty mean.

DOD FX80B Compressor Sustainer

I'm slowly recovering from some sort of an drawer's block. Simply couldn't get any layout to look decent enough to publish. Our friend Myrkky Nuoli requested this after i wrote a piece about the original unit. So i drew it and it turned out nice. It could probably be a lot more compact, but with 21x21 it's still fairly easy fit for 1590B. Built one myself and it sounds very good. It may not offer a lot of boost, but you'll notice if it's not on. For some reason this was the only youtube demo i could find:

DOD 555 Performer Distortion

The orginal unit uses two 9V batteries and electronic swithing. I removed the latter, but left the supply voltage wanting the 18V. With this, i also left the (possibly) destructive polarity protection method in tact. For the supply, one can use two batteries or add a small daughter board to pump the standard 9V voltage close to desired 18V. That pump would be something like this or this.




DOD Studio Bifet Preamp / 410

Without the pseudo-balanced output and adapted to work as a stompbox. Not really sure if this is worth a build as it is supposed to be not that loud. Simple design with low parts count, so it might be nice thing to experiment on... The pot tapers are not mentioned on the schematic i found, but i suspect that linear should work well enough for both.

DOD Overdrive Preamp 250 Reissue

Got an early 90s unit recently, the chinese reissue with JRC4558 chip. I'm still really surprised how good it sounds. So i do think this is very neglected and underrated pedal. I've added polarity protection diode and pulldown resistor for the input. The chip is stated as KA4558 in the italian reissue schematic i found (and some random gutshots from the web confirm that), but you could try any dual opamp in there. Now you can build your own with true bypass, indicator LED and standard power jack!

DOD FX55-B Supra Distortion

Why not repeat the same perfect scheme that worked pretty well ten years earlier?

This one apparently has the same circuit board as the FX50. Original used TL062, so TL061 is probably the right chip for the job. Like FX50, the other half of the opamp didn't touch the signal path when engaged at all, so i decided to go with a single.



DOD FX50-B Overdrive Plus

Here's DOD's step up from FX50 :)

Just finished building this. The pot tapers are not mentioned in the schematic, so i went with the usual tapers from most designs. However. Volume needs to be linear and drive reverse log to get the circuit act like the original unit. Other thing was the 470R resistor on the bottom left. 470R gave me lots of oscillation when gain was cranked, so i swapped that to 4K7, which fixed the problem. I do believe that's an error in the schematic i did this from, but i can't be certain. Anyway - it works like a charm and is very nice OD indeed. Fat and smooth.




DOD FX50 Overdrive Preamp

Here's DOD's step up from OD250 - from around '82.

On the original unit, the chip used is TL022, which is low power dual opamp - But the other half doesn't touch the effect side at all - It's only used as a buffer for the bypassed signal. So i made the layout to house a single opamp instead. TL061 is low power single opamp from the same family of chips - so i believe it should sound pretty close to the original.

DOD 280 Compressor

Here we go with another classic optical compressor. Original unit uses VTL5C2, so could get away with using any LDR with 1M dark resistance. So the LDR resistor would be  resistor leads of VTL5C2 and that green LED acts as LED leads of the vactrol. Positive/anode to strip four and negative/cathode to strip one. Haven't built it myself yet..
