DOD FX56 American Metal

I think Mark would have squeezed this in a bit more compact size, but i got it "down" to 21x29. So super brave folk may aim for 1590B, but rest of us may want to give this a go with 125B or 1590BB instead. Layout is based on a schematic which was provided with the original units, along with stickers and other paperwork. Circuit has some similarities with Boss HM-2 Heavy Metal as the youtube demo below suggests. Sounds pretty mean.

  1. I think a cut is missing under the polarity diode.
    Anyway, handsome layout !

  2. Can you turn this into the Super American Metal? instead of tone know it has Bass and a presence control? This was my very first guitar pedal clear back in 1986 or 87,man did i love this pedal.I knew back then it was awsome cause a really awsome local band here in the valley lead singer/guitarist used one too.Brick Mistress rules check em out...

    1. Haven't seen a schematic for FX56B, but tweaking the low gyrator to have a control should be doable. Not sure if it's the only thing that differs though.

  3. Yeah, this is a nice sounding pedal, as many DOD are. Anyway, this build can get as expensive (or more) than buyin' an original one. If I'm not wrong, I payed €25 for my unit, they're dirty cheap on second hand market.

    1. Paid 40€ for mine. Near mint, with box and papers. Seems these are more common in europe than they are in US.

But then again.. There are only a few of units which are cheaper to build than to get the original as used.. Javi, you should grab one of those cheap EHX Ge4's for me :)

    2. I don't think so, Miro. My most expensive builds, Openhaus, Meatball and some others, were about €75 including enclosures, shippin' and all components.

An average pedal is about 15-20 euros to build, and for this price you can barely buy a Joyo or a Caline.

Sometines I get shocked, when people ask me to build a clone of Mxr Distortion + ZW Overdrive or similar pedals that you can get second hand for 40 euros.

That's why I like to build and sell the most old and difficult to get effects. If I wanna try a Distortion +, I just pay a few euros (20 for my "non working" one :P), so I prefer to spend time and money in effects that otherwise I'd never get the chance to try or listen if I don't rob some banks: the Openhaus, the Phasor II, 60's-70's fuzzes, old Bif Muffs and so on.

Circuits like this, or the cheaper Ibanez are funny to look at and check how they're built, bur for example this Dod is similar in building difficulty as a Triple Wreck, with the difference that I cannot get a second hand TW for less than €200, but I can get this DOD for 25 :P

Don't get me wrong, effects like the DS-1 or Blues Driver, EHX Metal Muff and many others, are cheap as chips, and there are some of my favourite effects. There's not really an idea of "cheap bad, expensive good", just a way of tryin' effects: I pay the cheap ones and build the unobtanium ones :P

If I get some G4 for cheap, I'll let you know, no problem!

    3. You are correct. I was thinking more about the modern factory built pedals from late 80's to tday. In that case it is true, but not for old or high end boutique pedals.. Damn i'm hung over right now. :)

  6. The layout works, the distortion knob works counter-clockwise as laid out. Used OA1160's at 0.270 fv (my 1n34a's are all garbage)
    Thanks alot for the layout!
