Catalinbread Manx Loaghtan

I know there have been veros around for a while but I wanted to add this project to the main page.
It's basically a Rams Head Muff with an added Baxandall tone control.
You can find original FSB thread and schematic here.
It should easily fit it in 1590B size box.


Crank both treble and bass and you get a classic scooped midrange. Back both off, while turning up the volume knob and your midrange content increases. Park the treble and roll back the bass and the midrange scoop frequency shifts downward so you have complete control over which frequencies you are cutting. Roll the bass below noon and you start to add a bump to your midrange, which is great for running into a hot amp.   1. Thanks. On the page after the schematic was posted, they correct the 470k's going from base to ground on Q2,Q3 as 100k instead - like on Q1,Q5.

  2. Baxandall? Isn't this a passive tonestack? Then it's called "James"

    1. The tonestack is known as a James-Bandaxall tonestack, and can be active or passive. In this case just like the stock BMP tonestack it's passive, with a recovery stage after it to regain the output lost from the tonestack.

  4. Verified! I did find the level a bit low so i changed the 2k2 coming of the emitter of the 2N2222 to a 1k as mentioned in the thread on FSB and now it sounds perfect. Thanks Alex.

  5. Anyone else get some oscillation/whine from higher fuzz settings? My only substitutions were the 130ohm resistors subbed with 120ohm. Otherwise, it sounds great!

    1. i get whine...i've build the pcb from perf&pcb effects layouts.my only substitutions are 120Ω for 130Ω too...
      i'm working on it.did you found any solution?

    2. Hey guys, I don't get any whine or noise at all. Do get a bit of self oscillation when sustain maxed but not in a bad way. I'm using metal can 2N2222s if that makes a difference.

    3. I haven't found a solution to the whine/oscillation other than running a buffer before the circuit. That fixed it up (and I've gone this route with a few other circuits with a similar issue), but it may be overkill.

    4. my build is ok now. the layout here has 100k from all bases to ground. there was a mistake in the layout i used...cheers

  6. just finished my build (with 120r instead of 130r, everything else as mentioned), i get a signal, but it is extremely quiet! the controls all semm to do what they should, but i'm a ca 5% of bypassed gain... any ideas what i should look out for? regards...
