DeleteYou might want to consider swapping the output caps to 10n/22n instead of stock 4n7/10n - or maybe even higher like 22n/47n.
Power filter cap would be a good addition also. Didn't include it here (the new Vox Tonebender compact layout has it) as it wasn't on the schem, nor on the Mark's earlier layout.

I think the 10n/22n would be a good idea as the stock 4n7 sounded really thin and weak. (i made the original layout a while ago) It's not a bad fuzz but it seems to react very similar to a fuzz face meaning it dulls VERY quickly when turning back the fuzz. Also I found that on lower fuzz settings, the bais can sound 'off' so I may throw the bias as an external pot this time around.
DeleteWould I benefit building this is I already built a TB MK1.5 clone with measured NOS Mullard OC75 trans that sounds lovely. I noticed this uses just 2 transistors as well so I was curious if the changes , if any, would be that much better. Thanks in advance guys. I've just started with Vero and this sight is unbelievable. Can newbies to the site ask for requests of a particular pedal? I did a search but didn't find it and I think it's a hidden gem in the OD community.
ReplyDeleteOf course you would benefit building this, you should build everything! :o) Did you solder in the transistors or socket them? If you socketed them then it isn't going to cost you much to build up the board of resistors and caps and see what you think of it. I often share parts like that if I don't know whether I want to box and effect up and to test things out.

ReplyDeleteI've searched for the schematics for the two overdrive pedals I'm interested in but with no luck. I know this isn't the place to post this but can I still recommend them? I read one was based of the Bluesbreaker with some changes, not a KOT, and the other is a discreet IC based with blend control that I once owned and have regretted selling it since.

I'm curious if anyone might know what might require rejigging for this if I use low gain silicon (same as germanium) transistors in the circuit? I'm guessing a cat may be tempting fate here. I gotta get a breadboard for this stuff. Cheers for any help
ReplyDeleteCompare the layout to NPN version of Vox Tonebender :) Basically it's just electrolytic reversed and +9V.

Ah, so this is a vox tone bender derivative? I was just concerned about biasing voltages for silicon compared to germanium as like with the fuzz face there are subtle differences.

Build this layout with BC301s, Q1 at 92 hFE an Q2 at 118 hFE. These transistors really blew my mind. So creamy that it hurts. Better than the ones i've built with AC176s.. Put two output caps for a switch, 12n for "vintage" bass cut mode and 120n for modern full, fat mode. Plus black glossy paint on a black matte box is mean :) The light on the photo is bad - those knobs are bright, nearly neon orange...

hi, i've built one of this and it is awesome (OC75 and OC76). Thanks for the vero! but i have the feeling that it lacks a bit on the output lever. Is there a way to raise the output? Maybe lowering the value of some resistors? which ones?

so I see that the bias trim pot adjusts the bias for the Q2 in this layout. should I try to adjust the 10k resistor to get 4.5v or there abouts and then adjust the trimpot to taste? and wont messing with that 10k connected to the collector of Q1 affect the voltage coming off the collector of Q2. as opposed to messing with Q2's trimpot not affect q1?
ReplyDeleteYou can do it either way, but if you have a good ear then you'll get the best results biasing it by ear
ReplyDeleteYou can mess with the 10K to Q1 collector but if your transistors are appropriate for this build you shouldn't need to
