The DOD Carcosa Fuzz is a doorway into an alternate fuzz universe,

are the transistors really 2b5089 can't seem to fin them? or just a typo with the n? (2n5089)

After is bias
Hicut (reduces hi freq detail- start at 9oclock and go back for bright, forward for dark pickups.)
And the switch is demhe/ hali with demhe being a low mid b bass boost and hali being a bass cut.

DeleteIts an interesting one, i wanna give it some more time but my missus is having a paddy so i have had to shut the amp off and have a blazing row with her. Fun times.
But back to fuzzes im on my major fuzz kick atm and this is defo a keeper.
Just checkin, volume 2 to output and to ground through a 680pf cap?
ReplyDeleteHey man. Volume 2 goes to output like normal, and you put the 680pF cap from lug 2 to ground. If you put the output/volume 2 to ground no signal would pass.

Deleteanytime man, happy to help. i would have made the connections on the board, but figured having 2 more wires on the board would make it less neat, and i would have had to added another row. plus, to make it super easy, just attach the cap between lug 2 and lug 1 of the volume switch, super easy.
DeleteAnyone else having issues with this? I get an effected signal but it is very weak and the controls seem to have little to no effect on the overall sound. I did not have any BAT41 so I substituted BAT46. Could this be the issue?
ReplyDeleteFigured it out. Might want to update the orientation of the transistors for us color by numbers guys. 2n5089 is EBC from the top with flat side facing left.

ReplyDeleteIt is impossible to find C100k pot where i live, only C5k, C10k, C500k, and C1M. What should i do? Switch to other taper? If then, which: linear of log?

To get a reverse log pot,you can always wire a log pot backwards. It works well, but the max and minimum will be reversed aswell.

You'll get 125k pot with a characteristic very close to C

Finally got around to building one last night. Sounds good, everything works, but I'm getting a lot of white noise with the after cranked up and the gain over halfway. Anyone else having this issue? Admittedly,I boxed it up at 2am. Could be a grounding issue, I'll try and resolder my ground points tonight.
ReplyDeletePlayed around some more and any setting with the bias in its last guarter of its rotation induces serious white noise. I don't know where I went wrong. Puzzling.
DeleteUpdate: if anyone has excess noise with this build you may need to swap the trannies. My 5089's were all around 600 hfe. After some trial and error I landed on 5 bc109c's around 500-550. Cured the problem, may still play around some more. On the blog, Anders said he needed to use 5088's in his for the same reason.
ReplyDeleteI have played one of these and it is amazing. It's actually the fuzz I have been looking for! So if I wanted to build one without the bass boost switch can I simplify the section with the 220K/10nF caps? Looking at the schematic there is a symmetrical section with a 220K resistor in parallel with a 10nF cap on each side of a 100K to ground. The 220K resistor on the switch kinda bypasses this set-up to provide a bass boost. Can I replace all of this with just a cap and resistor if I don't want the boost?

ReplyDeleteWhy do you need an SPDT? There isn't any wiring for SW1.
ReplyDeleteYou can use an SPST, but not they're not as common and more people have SPDT switches laying around.
Deleteguys, I am building this and put it in the original Carcosa enclosure. which is demhe and hali if we refer it to the circuit/schematic?
ReplyDeleteI made this and it seems to work well but the overall volume of the pedal seems lower than the bypassed signal. Is this normal or can I boost it with a pot or resistor change?
