BJFE Baby Blue OD

The BJFE Baby Blue OD is described as a dynamic pre-amp tube distortion, although it is technically more of a fuzz pedal with dynamic overdrive features.  It is a killer fuzzy OD with a ton of dynamic and tonal range.

So according to the thread over at FSB there's no mention of the specific JFETs in the original other than they're N-JFET. It's possible they're either BF244 or 2N5952 both of which Bjorn is known to use. So I decided to make 2 layouts, one with a DGS pinout (BF244) and one with DSG (2N5952) so either can be made. There is also a question as to whether or not the 47k resistor going from Drain of Q1 to the power rail actually being 14.7k like the drains of Q2 and Q3, so as of now if you build this you may want to socket that resistor so you can try both and see which sounds better.

BF244 (DGS) Layout

2N5952 (DSG) Layout

  1. Thanks a lot! I really like the sound of this, however to me both appear exactly the same, with the DSG pinout.

    1. Oops. Forgot to save the the DGS layout. I'll upload it when I get home. Thanks for the catch.

    2. Updated. Should be the correct layout now.

  2. Hi ! You're having very great job ;-)
Can not find 2A1200 diodes.. Do you have any substitute ?
Thanks for your help and long live Tagboareffects !

  3. Hello. I setup on the breadboard from your schematic and it did not work. I believe treble 2 and 3 should go to the ground, as well as the 10k resistor. With these changes, it worked.
I used J113 and 2N5458. I preferred with J113, because with 2N5458 the bass frequencies was bad for my taste. With 2N5458 I had to use trimmers to bias. With the J113 the 47k, 47k and 14.7k values worked perfectly. Sorry about my English. Google translator...

    1. You are right Marcus.
Treble 2,3 / 10K resistor go to ground.
Also, the 47n cap from Treble 1 should be 4n7.
There is the corrected V2 schematic on the same FSB page.

    2. odd i don't see that in the schematic over on the FSB thread. i made the change anyways if that gets it sounding right. cheers.

    3. Aiyaahh! Now it's worse than before, Drive 1 is not connected to anything! Drive 1 should connect to ground through the 10k resistor and Treble 2,3 should connect directly to ground. The previous layout could accomplish that by adding a jumper between the ground row and the row above it.

    4. first off eddie. first, if there's an error then point it out without sounding like a unappreciative for the time and effort that's put into making all these layouts. myself and any of the other guys that make them don't get paid to do it and do it for the love of it and everyone in the community. second, off, if you don't like layouts then make one yourself.

the layouts have been corrected and updated.

    5. I regret that my cheerful California informality didn't translate well over the blogosphere, I'm sad that it came across as negative. I totally appreciate the time and effort you guys put in. My comments over the years are always meant to be helpful because I love this site and want everyone to have successful builds.

I do have a few designs up my sleeve. I look forward to sharing them when I feel they are fit for consumption.

Thanks again for all the hard work. Feliz Navidad to all.

    6. apologies accepted. no worries bro, it's just that without actually hearing someone say sometimes they can be come across in a completely unintended way. i'm more than guilty of it many man times. no harm, no foal.

i'm glad you've got a lot out of the builds and part of the community. enjoy the builds and rock on bro.

    7. also, glad you caught the errors so i could fix them quickly.

    8. I couldn't get it to work......is it because I could not find the 14th cut? Maybe.

  4. Hello! Thank you for a very nice blogg :)
I was also wondering if there's any other diod that can replace the 2A1200?
    Cant find them anywhere.

    1. As it says in the notes use silicon diodes in place of the 2A1200.

    2. Ah sorry, missed that. Thank you!

    3. Thank You for the layout. Will it good if all diodes will be like first (1N4004)?

    4. alexander lonnberg - no worries man, just tried to make my response quick and simple.

vovian1 - i don't see why not. different diodes have different forward voltages, so their will be slight differences in distortion. you could try any Si, Ge, BAT, or LEDs to see what you like.

  5. But will be fine to know what is in original (: just to have original sound. If it possible (:

    1. Not to sound snippy, but If you want the original sound you need the original diodes, which where labeled 2A1200, otherwise you'll have to find something that's comparable, which may or may not be 1N4004.

  6. Who made this project. What transistor is better 2N5952 or BF244? Thanks.

    1. I don't know about BF244, but I used 2N5952 for all and it sounded just like a real BBOD I was borrowing from a buddy!

  7. I've built this twice- both times I used 2N5952 for all transistors, but I used 1N4001 diodes on one and 1N4148s on the other.. The 4001s sounded just like the real BBOD I was comparing it to, but I really dug the extra headroom and crunch of the 4148s.

Also- A50k for the Treble sounded best (and most accurate) to me!

  10. Hi everyone. Today I finished the project and made a little video where I try different diodes.
    Diodes are:
    1N5408
    1N4007
    GP30M
    1N5399
    Д220 (soviet USSR vintage)
    КД209 (soviet USSR vintage)
    2Д504 (soviet USSR vintage)

I like very much soviet and GP30M.

  11. So does the 2N5952 layout have 14 cuts? I only count 13. Thanks!

    1. I completed it as laid out (13 cuts) and it works perfectly.

  12. I like it better with j113 trannies than 2n5952. More gain and better eq. May not be as accurat to the bbod but I like better that way.

  13. Do the 2 0,47uF caps need to be electrolytic? I can´t make this circuit work and can´t find out what i´m doing wrong except choosing filmcaps. it´s completely dead.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Finally found the reason for not functioning! It works perfectly with filmcaps for the 0,47uF. The reason for not functioning was the orientation of the 2N5952. Graphically it´s put 180 degrees wrong in the drawing. The GDS´s marked right though! Thanks a lot for this pcb. It sounds amazing!!!
