EHX Axis / Guild Foxey Lady 2-knob

The circuit is exactly the same in Electro Harmonix Axis fuzz and Guild's 2-knobbed Foxey Lady. 2N5133 may and will be very hard and expensive to source, so i'd suggest trying out any low hFE NPN Si transistors. Or go wild and try on anything you like. The cap values of 50µ and 4µ is another issue. Go with 47µ and 4.7µ. Should be close enough. I've added polarity protection and pulldown resistor, but you could omit them and save a column in order to make it verbatim with the original.

  1. Hmm, this looks kinda cool, I thought it was just a fuzz face variant at first, but reading around, it seems to be more interesting than that. I think I shall add this to my build list....
Cheers for the layouts as usual Miro and Mark, I wonder how many pedals are left in the world that dont feature on here.....
    Cheers

    1. You can stop wondering: http://www.effectsdatabase.com/
As of today, there are 2597 fuzzes and 3320 overdrives in there. And i'm not even checking on the other types :)

    2. Ha, I bet there are only about 4 or 5 different circuits there though, they'll be fuzz faces, muffs, tonebenders and tubescreamers. The world of effects pedals has gotten pretty ridiculous.

    3. There are still a few to do, particularly bigger circuits, but I think the vast majority of the fuzzes and overdrives we haven't done will already appear on the site in one guise or another. We'll still be kept busy though, effects are still being released all the time and so there will plenty to reverse and do layouts for in the future, even if we are unlikely to have any 100+ layout months in the foreseeable future.

    4. Yeah good point. Actually, that reminds me, I've got a layout or two to come your way soon, whats the best format to send it to you? And would you prefer it sent to you or posted in the forum?

    5. I'd say post them in the forum.

And yes. The schematics that are available have been more or less seen with only a few easy ones popping up every now and then. While it would be possible to just draw up the big ones, i personally am against drawing up circuits that take a week to build and two weeks to debug. And however some may see it, almost every single design is always based on some earlier design or idea.

    6. By the way.. I just opened up a new section on the forum called "contributions". You're welcome to throw the first brick.

  2. I have some BC182's that I want to try for this build.... those are pretty low gain
    or may try some BC132's...
Hope this one works out... THANKS!

  3. I'm tempted to build this, for nearly no other reason than that I'm completely out of 10k resistors (and 12k, and 8k...) which has my hands tied on a number of other projects while waiting upon reinforcements to come in.

Looks like 2N5133 are roughly HFE=60. I think I have some out of spec BC108s that measured down that low that I may try here. For those looking for actual 2N5133s, Small Bear seems to carry them for $1.50 each. Since the rest of the components on this build are pennies, dropping $3 on the transistors is certainly not going to break the bank.

    1. Sorry, just found a more complete version of the 2N5133 specs and it looks like 220 is the average HFE, while 60 was the minimum.

  4. I built this fuzz and it is mighty beast. I didn't have all the right parts so i changed few values. I used 2N222 trannies with this and then we had thick fuzz to blast with!

  5. Hey quick question: The layout says the volume 2 is the output, but where is the Volume 2 located?

    1. That would be the pot lug between lugs 1 and 3.

  6. what diode is a good replacement for 1N5817? any schottky would work?

    1. Any schottky will do (1N4001-1N4007 and so on). Even 1N4148 will work, but all the others than 1N5817 have higher voltage drop, so we are just used to having those. They come pretty cheap and most of our layouts have those as polarity protection diodes, so it may be a good idea to buy them.

In this case, you could also omit the protection altogether by leaving the diode out and taking the +9V to the top row.

  8. Hi! This blog is simply amazing.
I just build the Foxey Lady. This is my first veroboard project.
I think all went fine... But it seems to me that FUZZ POT works backwards... Is it possibile??
