DOD FX52 - Classic Fuzz

The FX52 Classic Fuzz duplicates the sound of the early 60s distortion boxes, such as the Fuzz Face and the Fuzz Tone. A must for musicians looking for a more nostalgic sound.

  1. What a big board for such an old-school effect!
I had one of these, a little bit Big Muff, a little bit Fuzz Face, but not as good as either!

Loved the Metal Flake orange, though!

  2. Well, curiosity drove to build this and I'm not sure this warrants 2 ICs but it works anyway, giving a little bit of hair around an otherwise cleanish sound. ie, not as fuzzed out as I would of hoped. Used a 5532 instead of a 1458, however. Would this have anything to do with this? Cheers, Miro, keep 'em coming.

    1. I think that's the exact reason. The 5532 has JFET inputs, and it needs to be biased with care - Not the case with 1458. But then again, that IC is used just for in/out buffers, so i'm thinking you may also have something else going on in there..

    2. So, essentially, it's the first part of the LF353 and the clipping diodes that should be creating more dirt, is this the area I should be looking at?

    3. You should get the fuzzed signal at LF353 pin 7..

    4. Well, just received a 1458 in the post from Bitsbox and, amazingly, even though this used for input/output buffers, it does give it a lift; more distortion, more sustain. So consider this verified.
Don't believe the hype though, this not a replacement for a Big Muff (IMO). Smashing Pumpkins?.......no, crushing grapes?.......yes. Billy Corgan?.....no, Billy Piper?........maybe!

      Mark :-)

    5. Marketing spiel does lead you to a forest with no light in sight :)
It is pretty close to other DOD circuits. But still i think this is fun little project.

Thanks for verifying Mark! You've been on a roll for a while!

  3. Yeah, I agree, I've enjoyed every build I've done so far from this site. Even the problematic ones keep me enthralled; beats sudoko any day of the week! Now......piss off, enjoy your respite, and give us mortals a chance to catch up with the back log :-J

  4. I've got an old one I'm thinking of modding, any chance you'd know what to change for more mids and less compression (maybe more lows for bass)? Think I'm gonna change a pair of diodes to LEDs (worked really well for my EHX Little Big Muff) but not sure what else would help, thanks M!
