Bearfoot Honey Beest

Been awhile since a new post on the main site. Life can get in the way, but here's a new one. Keep an eye out for more, we still here and going strong.

Descended from the Honey Bee, this one is capable of more dynamic dirt and quicker and thicker honey. If that’s what you’re after, the Beest can help.

The Honey Beest is an extension of the classic Honey Bee, adding saturation and treble to a much loved design. The heart of the Beest is the addition of a pregain booster controlled by the Pregain knob. The pregain booster is not a simple linear booster, but has an intentional upper mid and treble accent that lets you mix the two gain stages to get just the right saturation and treble. The Nature and Pregain knobs make a wide-ranging EQ section. The Drive and Pregain knobs give full control of the distortion saturation and compression. This also makes the “big bottom” part of the Nature control more useful. Turning the Nature knob full left and the Pregain full right creates a full range overdrive…sort of like if you’ve got a 50-watt 4×12 Supro.

  5. It still indicates "unverified" in the tags section. It will show up as verified there after someone builds it and verifies. There will typically be comments from whoever builds it as well, indicating whether it worked or if there were/are issues. Keep checking in.

  9. Should the input go from the 22n and 14.7k to the gate of the first 2n5952? It is going to the source in the layout. Just wondering....

    1. my screw up. i had to actually change a few other things, both transistors were set up wrong (made it for pinout "DGS" instead of "DSG" when i realized i had the wrong pinout originally and found an error or two. stuck with 1 standing resistor so I don't have to make the layout any larger. it's all fixed now.

    3. And wouldn't you know it. Out of the thousands of parts I have sitting around, I'm missing 2 components. Gotta make an order. Thanks again for the layout. I suppose I should finish the other 3 that I have partially done but, might as well add another...

  10. Hi guys, thanks Zack for the new layouts. Has this one been verified? I'm having trouble with my build. Very low output. I have gone over it several times but havent found anything amiss. Tracing with audio probe backwards from the output it seems from the 2nd jfet is where the signal dies out. One odd thing I notice is I can hear signal on the V+ links. Never encountered that before.

    1. Yeah, I swapped out Q2 and all is good. Guess its faulty or a fake. Do not know why I didnt try that 1st. Thanks bbender for confirming its verified

  12. Hey! Thanks for the layout! Works like a charm (once I figured out my wrong soldering of one of the capacitors...)

    But I am not sure about the PreGain connections, could they be flipped? Feels like its maximum all CCW and decreases when turning up... I double checked the inverse log and I got the right Poti.

    1. To catch up on this, I finished the design and it works... I seem to get some noise but I still need to test it on a bigger amp.
      I ended up flipping the soldering points of the PreGain poti, using 2 and 3 instead of 1 and 2, so now it actually increases with a CW turn.

  15. Does anyone have the voltages for Q1, Q2 and the IC? My build is not working. ALSO, can I use SDG pinout on my JFETS for this circuit? I know that source and drain are often interchangeable. Thanks for your help! Love the site!
