Rockett 10 Ton Hammer

"The Rockett Pedals 10 Ton Hammer is a perfect distortion pedal for players who have a clean amp, like a Fender. It may not play nicely with high gain amplifiers, thats just the nature of the high gain game. This is a highly responsive pedal, and with some creative use of your guitars volume and tone knobs, you can even achieve some bluesier tones for added versatility. But really, subtlety isnt this pedals primary job. It is here to crush, kill, and destroy, but in a very musical and harmonically rich way. Get back in tune with the old school overdrives that made you wanna rip some killer riffs and leads in the first place. The Rockett Pedals 10 Ton Hammer will unleash a pummeling tone with all the intensity of a monstrous wall of distortion"
Original FSB thread and schematic available here.
Layout Updated! Connected 10K resistor from Bass 1 to Ground instead of Vb.

  2. Alex, again an amazing layout man. I just finished the BE-OD board and building pedals with your layouts is always a pleasure :D
    I'll give this one a try !

  3. Another killer layout! As always, thanks Alex!

    1. Aye man, best way is to get you multimeter and put it to the legs of the trimmer and tweak til it registers around that voltage. As its only one trimmer, you can do it by ear if you dont have a multimeter, just stop tweaking the trimmer when your happy with the sound. A quick google search will provide you with a more indepth answer, and i believe over at the fsb (freestompboxes) forum there are guides to help newcomers in all manner of area.

  5. Circuit works but low volume problems. Ive check cuts etc.

    1. The FET is output recovery. Have you tried tweaking the trimmer by ear? Is your JFET good?

    2. I have, i know it got louder a bit. I havent had time to try anything else tho. But i did have a quick look at the schem on the fsb and i did see some diff values in the large uf (polarised??) caps. 10, 47uf and here 22, 100 uf.

    3. 10uF and 47uF are just there for power filtering. I've increased them just to avoid noise. They won't influence anything else. I've seen some videos around (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tpTFlFv3Yc8) and it doesn't seem to have an excessive amount of volume. I haven't built it myself. When does yours reach unity?

  6. I can't be more thankful for all that y'all do here. Thanks for this Alex.

  7. mine seems to work fine its not overly loud but it seems to be ok, its hard for me to tell because im using it into a DAW program

    1. I'm seriously amazed they were able to squeeze that much gain out of this set up. if i wanted to boost a little more gain out of it what resistor should i try playing with?

  8. I have built this and seem to have an issue with the bass pot. It seems to be acting like a volume and bass pot. If i turn it fully CCW the volume decreases to nothing and fully CW it sounds full volume and pretty good. Been over the board several times and all seems fine. Joseph/Jesse are you getting the same thing with the bass pot?

  9. Just looked over the schematic and with my limited skills managed to work out all seems correct with the 50k trim replacing the 15k to V+ to J201s drain. Slowly learning. Maybe the schematic is incomplete? Manfred did mention an internal PCB layer.

    1. My guess is that the Vref at the bass pot is wrong. Reference: http://www.electronicecircuits.com/electronic-circuits/bass-treble-tone-control-circuit

As the Manfred's schematic and the layout is, there is half of supply voltage present at the FET gate, which could be the cause of your issue. Could you try to desolder the lower lead of that 10K coming from bass lug 1 (next to D2) and solder it back to ground strip instead of the original VREF? This could possibly solve it.

    2. Changed that and its now good to rock. Nice spot Miro. Think you can now call this verified!

    3. I should add that its still on the quiet side unless volume is at max.

    4. The FET should be able to boost it a lot. Is your J201 good? Have you tried biasing it by ear? Can you try 2N5457 or MPF102 in there instead?

I'll post the vref error on the fsb thread.. Thanks for confirming the fix!

    5. Its more when you turn the volume pot down the volume drops too quickly, maybe it needs a linear pot, as that's what seems to be in the original looking at the pics. I'll quickly change it and get back to you in five.

    6. Ok, linear pot for volume works better, sweeps way more even. I'll try some other FETs tomorrow. Have already tried both through hole and SMD j201s with only very minor differences. I'll report back if i find anything. Thanks for the help Miro.

    7. Yup. You are correct. The volume pot is definitely B100K on the pics - and the schematic.

Alex will most likely fix the 10K resistor to ground and B100K for the volume once he sees these comments.

    1. So Gavin, what you say is that with the volume pot fully open you only have unity volume ?

    2. Its actually better now using the linear pot and using my ear to set the trimmer.

    3. OK thanks I will build it this week-end probably;-)

  11. What's the clr in this? I know it is a current limiting resistor, but what are we aiming for here? LED?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Yes, you are correct. If you follow it, you see that 1 side traces back to 9v, the other side connects to the wire that goes to the LED+. For regular LED's I go for 2.7K usually.

  12. Built it and sounds great, a ton of gain as it says :)
A lot of output, no problem. The only thind i'm considering modifying is the taper of the treble pot, with an 8th of a turn you go from bassy to ear bleeding
    Well worth boxing, thanks guys

    1. I tried rev log but it was worse, than 500k log (i don't have 1M) and it's perfect, so for me it's definitely a log pot for the treble. I'll keep 500k (pedal seemed a bit quieter than with 1M)

    2. Thanks mate! Changed it to Log.

    1. There's been a campaign from this particular source. I've removed something like 200 comments with the same message and reported abuse (spam) to google for 5 different "users" already.

Google should definitely get their shit together and do something about it...

It seems have the hot spot when I turn to 4 o'clock, then the bass will suddenly boost
    Any comment ?
