EarthQuaker Devices Talons

Info about the original:
The Talons is an extremely versatile high gain overdrive that serves up the full range of gain from transparent boost to heavy saturation, and all points in between. Unlike all our other overdrives, the Talons was not designed to emulate any specific sound or era. The presence control gives you a wide range of top-end contour and the active 3 band EQ allows you to sculpt your tone to perfection. The Talons can be powered at the standard 9v for a warmer amp-like tone or at 18v for greater headroom, more volume and a brighter, stiffer grind.

  1. Nice job Alex !! When you say "Caps rated 25+", does it mean that all caps (non polarized too) need to have a voltage value > 25 volts ? Thanks !

  2. Alex, is there any way you could post larger versions of the layout images? At 320 x 289 the component values are sort of blurry, I just want to make sure I'm reading things correctly. Thanks for all the nice layouts, there's a lot of cool new stuff I'm looking forward to building!!

  3. 25V+ is only for the polarized caps.
    The others are usually much higher.
    If you click on the layout it gets bigger (i'm afraid won't get any bigger than that).

    1. The electrolytics need to be rated at least 25V if you choose to use an 18V power supply.

      My general rule of thumb for pedals and caps are...
      If I am making a fuzz or anything that just uses 9v power supply, I will get caps at 16v or higher. And if the power supply for the pedal is 15v or 18v, then I look for 25v caps or more... Keep in mind that the more voltage a cap is rated, the bigger the size cap so try and get the lowest voltage (25v) if you can.

  9. It's the current limiting resistor. Usually 1-5k. This is the resistor that controls the brightness of the led you have for indicating by the effect is on/engaged.

      When I draw a layout my two main concerns are pots wiring and caps sizes.
      I get stressed quite easily and when I build a circuit I hate having to struggle with wiring or trying to fit components in tidy spaces. I know some layouts could be a bit smaller but I prefer to make them as easy to build as possible.

      When you buy the alpha pots from Tayda they are included. Great deal! mammoth electronics sells them too, they have really nice colorful ones they just cost$$$.

  15. Liking this one. Its quite similar to my Madbeean Chunk Chunk but with slightly more bass and sustain. Another great pedal!

  16. Would you be able to advise please on how much replacing the 3M2 resistor with a 3M3 would affect the sound? I cannot find a 3M2 anywhere.

    1. not at all! even a 1M will not change the tone. it's a pulldown resistor. in fact most effects use a 1M resistor in that place...but anyway.use that 3,2M

  17. This seems to get a really nice sparkly clean tone when drive pot is at zero. Maybe this could be a good alternative to the detox eq. in order to "clean" an already cranked amp with that powerful tonestack...

  19. Ok so I just built this thing, and I'm still pretty new to building pedals (this was my first vero board build). So I plug it in and everything works fine but it is super quiet and the volume drops when it's engaged. Please help. Thanks

  21. I build 2 of this beast and on the 2 pedals I've a problem of hiss bypassed and engaged, like there is a filtering problem of DC. Nobody get this problem?

  24. Hi everyone, I just built this pedal and it works great. I am giving it 9v but is there a solution for the led brightness not to change with 18v? I am thinking about some transitor or ic trick, but I didn't catch any solution :/

    1. never thought about that before. maybe a zener diode would help keep the led limited to a certain range or specific voltage...?
