When people talk about wah-wah pedals, they’re talking about the Cry Baby Wahs. This is the one that created some of the most timeless sounds in rock. While other effects have come and gone, the Cry Baby Wah just keeps getting better with age.
I highly recommend the Whipple inductor. Insatalled one on my crybaby, very sweet sounding.
ReplyDeleteDo you have any idea of the dimensions including pin spacing of the Whipple? Some inductors are going to be a pain to use with vero but it shouldn't be hard to adapt the layout in a way that will accommodate any but I literally know nothing about the different inductors used in these wahs and so am not sure at this stage how things would need to be adapted.
DeleteI don't recall exactly, but I think it's similar to the Fasel. It dropped right in to the Crybaby PCB with no modifications needed.

ReplyDeleteYes an old volume pedal will work fine as an enclosure, I'd just check there would be no problem mechanically in mounting the correct pot
Deletethey way i build wahs is i look for broken wahs on ebay. i've picked up multiple enclosures for $15-20, i just pull out the guts and put in what i want instead. also. i saw the comment about the whipple, i believe the spacing is the same as a halo inductor, which is 5x5, i think. while i haven't used one a whipple, i've used halo's, fasels, and recently used El Rad style inductors made by joe gagon, he sells them on ebay as the Tone Tank, which i now is the only one i'ld use, the spacing is 4x4 if you make a layout for it.

Deletenah. you would just need to place it in the same area where the inductor is now, and remove or move the links that are underneath it to make the right connections, and you may need to add a cut or two. not a big deal. i did that when i built my wow-fuzz. i had the layout for a halo style, but went with the tone tank i had joe make.

Deletecan't agree more man. he now calls it the tone tank, as he changed the potting and something else about it. definitely the best inductor IMHO. plus he'll help you out with your build, and even make a custom wound one if you ask him. he wound one to about 800mHz, as i read that the colorsound wahs were that high, he made it for me, and explained to me what the inductance does (higher vs lower), he also didn't charge me extra. definitely a good guy in the DIY community.

ReplyDeleteSo as far as I can tell from the stinkfoot docs , I should change the 390ohm and use a 1k pot for the gain-bass , and change the 1.5k resistor 2k or 5k for Q.. ... I am also going to socket the inductrs parallel resistor and I will let you guys know my fav value for the fasel

Yes wah 3 also links to the output. I can't see anything obvious in your pics, can you post the transistor pin voltages to see if that tells us anything

yes the big orange thing on the layout is the inductor. i would assume that inductor will work, but i don't know the distance between the pins to know if it will fit perfectly on the layout, so you may have to do some modifications to get the connections in the right place, by adding link or two.
Deletenot sure where you are in the world, but if you're in the US, or would spend the money on shipping i would highly suggest looking on ebay for an inductor called the ToneTank, which is an El Rad style indcutor made by a guy name joe gagan who is big in the DIY community, and hand makes each one. they sound awesome. they're a little deeper/throatier sounding to my ears the other inductors, and they're the only one i use now. i think you would have to add links to make all the connections needed.

My friends, if I would take off the buffer components, can I put the 9v at the first stripe of board and the input at south side of 68k, right?

Yes. That sounds good. Although, you should omit the 10K from that strip to ground.

I'm using a bespeco wah enclosure withe a 100k pot and a fasel 500mH inductor. The pot is fine and the inductor is brand new. Im wondering why it doesmt work properly? Any idea?
