Devi Ever Legends of Fuzz

Another one from our friend Geiri, thanks for this again mate :o)
Info about the original:

The Bit : Legend of Fuzz has been compared to the Shin-ei Companion FY-2 fuzz, but with a stronger gate on circuit settings.  Some say, it’s a sound that haunts you at night… the desperate 8 bit beep that reminds you your heart is empty and you are close to death. Nostalgia is a lie. It tells you some how something that was is better than what is or what could be. Here it is though. A fuzz that elicits the sound of old video games… I guess. I mean, a lot of my gated fuzzes can do that for you. This one likes to particularly twist your guitar signal in a way that’s relatively like a saw tooth… a pretty fucked up saw tooth. Maybe we’ll define a new kind of saw tooth wave shape now… shark tooth, because that’s what this fuzz sounds like… a shark’s mouth full of teeth ready to clench down, and it doesn’t matter if a few are lost while eating cold rusted steel from a 1950′s buick rotting on the bottom of the ocean, because there is more where that came from. Unmerciful bastard of a fuzz really… just like that beep beep beep counting down the moments till your inevitable death

  1. Well, just finished building.

It works, but there are some issues that doesn't seem to be ok.

The main one is that the first half of the gain rotation is useless. With useless I mean that theres not even sound. Just in the last quarter of the rotation you get sound, and yeah, the sounds you can hear in the demo.

It makes me wonder if the gain pot is not really a 10k one.

Would be possible to have a look to the schematics? I've not benn able to find it in several weeks :P

    1. The gain pot in this circuit is just acting in the same way as your guitar's volume knob. It just control's the amount of signal going into the circuit, Devi doesn the same thing with a lot of her pedals. 100k should be fine, switching to a log pot might help though as it would give a smoother fade.

    2. Yes, and so it has a 1k resistor to set the minimum signal even with the pot full CCW.

The problem is that with the pot from full CCW to 10 o'clock, there's no sound, no output, too much resistance for the signal.

I've built many Devi pedals, ant the input pot use is not the same. On Hyperion, Torn's Peaker and so on, Gain pot lug two sweeps between 2 different input caps. Here just adjusts the amount of signal that gets to the circuit trough the same 100nf cap.

    3. No it's usually just simply in series with the input wire, this one is more like a muff gain control with the signal being dumped to ground and a minimum resistor to stop you going all the way down to nothing. Just disconnect the Gain 1 wire Jose and see if that minimum resistor is pulling everything down, then the rest of the pot should be acting as the usual Devi input pot does.

    4. Who's Jose? :P I'll give a try when I get home, too many office hours still....

    6. Got the schematic here: http://www.freestompboxes.org/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=3704&p=201724&hilit=legend+of+fuzz#p201724

    7. Ah sorry, I see where I've gone wrong. I just assumed that it had the standard input to 3, output from 2, ground to 1 wiring on the pot.

    8. Well....

Gain 1 wire loose: full CCW: flartering fuu fuzz. Full CW nice gated fuzz but very short sustain

Gain 1 wire directly to ground or trough a 1k resistor: Gain pot unusable until 11 o'clock.

Will have to tripe check everything, as the schematics clearly show an input verbatim to the Hyperion.

    9. So it's better to leave Gain 1 disconnected? I haven't built this yet so I don't know.

    10. Well, don't know really what to tell you... with gain control fron 11 o'clock onwards, sounds realy good and just like the demos, but backards is just flarty sound, not even similar to the sound you can hear in any video.

There must be something wrong with this schematic, I'm afraid, as no one has confirmed it a working in FSB,

    11. The guy who posted this says it's verified but that's as far as I know.

  2. I can already hear that fuzz chained with the EarthQuaker Devices Hummingbird :)
    Should be awesome

  7. Nice, I'll have to check this out!

  8. its gonna take a while for me to learn how to work with vero/strip board software like IvIark or Mirosol do, here there are the 33(silver crank) and the GZ original boards taken from the a BIT. Any help to finnish this? :)

  9. Sure would love to see a revised, working layout based on NIAB's pic. I count one more cap on the actual pedal than in the vero layout...

    1. You´re right Frederick (i didnt notice that about the cap). Here there are 2 differents BIT, both same components, values and amount of caps.

  10. Please correct me if i'm wrong... Following Devi's instruction about how to buil a GZ from a SM/VFM schematics should look like this?

    Any help please???

  11. (Got my imageshack erased)- Here's a link with a Verified build of the BIT. this pedal its working now. If someone wants to build it properly in just one board (instead of two) will be great!!! I dont know to manage the DIY software like you guys, so...
I´ll post some clips and pics soon.

    1. Hello,

I'm afraid that at least the Silver Crank side is not correct, as the output of the effect (and so the in of the second vero) is set... to ground.

      Can you recheck it?

  12. I´ll check later for sure, mine works really good, if you have a chance check this out, i made it following this:

  13. With respect, according to this: http://noiseinabox.blogspot.com/2013/06/building-gz.html

    The Soda Meiser published here:

needs to be corrected. Let me know if i´m wrong, i´m learning as well.

    1. 0.1uf is 100nf so the Soda layout is correct.

  14. so, i build this one, like the layout on the top, i checked everything
but i get unusaul sound, not like other devi ever´s.
first, the gain pot "does not work" , its always the same sound,
second, when i play on my treble hummbucker its just noise wich i can´t control on my guitare, when i go back to the rythm hummbucker i have a gated fuzz but , like i said, the gain poti does not work,
anyone an idea how i get this one right? i really like this pedal

    ReplyDelete
  15. well, problem gone ( beginners mistake... my third pedal..) and i solder a press button (spst On/off ) between gain 1 - ground, works to,
thanks for layout, great website !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  16. I built this, works just fine for me. Gated, splatty and brutal fuzz on the edge of oscillation. Not my cup of tea really, but I made it for a friend. Should fit his noise-project perfectly :D

  19. Is it possible to add a bias type pot to get different (usable) sounds out of this ? on which transistor would it work the best ?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. and if so .. would it be wise to set a minimun value resistor with this pot as to not let it go all the way to 0 ohms ?

  20. Any chance you'll ever do a Devi Ever Rocket build? It may be my favorite of the whole DE brand.

    ReplyDelete
  21. The one I built only works with the 2n2222a reversed and switching transistors in that spot changes the sound quite a bit

    ReplyDelete
  22. I believe the plastic case P2N2222A has a reversed pinout from the metal case. I used both in a 'Ritual' fuzz and had the same issue. The metal case sounds better imo ;)

    ReplyDelete
  23. Yeah I built this finally. It's so nasty. I love it. It's so gnarly through the sound saw I just finished. It's amazingly quiet for how brutal the fuzz is. Thanks Geiri

  24. About to build this - can anyone confirm that the vero above is correct?
(reading though all the comments about issues with layout - unsure if the layout pic was updated)
    Thanks in advance!

  25. Hi guys, I built one, it works but it sounds like a electrical substation, very extreme and uncontrollabe with blooming bass notes. (I know this is not a tame fuzz, but mine sounds just like a starting UFO xD) The only time it sounds ok is when i turn down both controls as well as my guitarvolume all the way. I suspect that the hfe of the trannies I used is of, it seems this circuit is sensitive to gain of the transistors and the gain ratio between them. I tried a few combinations, but they dont seem to work... Could somebody tell me the hfe in their builts? Thank You!
