Dragonfly El Diablo

  1. This isn't quite right I'm afraid, the 100nf resistor should go from the collector of Q2 to Volume 3 rather than from the end of D3. It worked with the original schematic but it was really quiet and just didn't feel right, after consulting the schematic I moved the cap and now it's a total fuzz beast! Looking at the layout I don't think there's anything for it except an extra column, I just had the cap twisted across the diodes but it doesn't look great.

This is a really good sounding fuzz by the way, I'd definitely recommend it - loud and in your face.

    1. Ah.. Dammit. So can see what i did wrong. As i was compacting the layout, i swapped the D3 and it's link's place. I need to swap those back...

I'll put it on hold and commit a fix once i get home...

    2. No worries, it's pretty simple to fix if anyone has started this build.

  2. Here's a quick demo I recorded of it: Dragonfly El Diablo Fuzz.

Sorry for the crappy quality, I'm still at the "point the mic at the cab and click record" level of sound recording and engineering.

    1. Cool! I'll add that to the post (once i've fixed it) and i'll tag it then.

      Thanks again man!

    2. If anyone's interested, i'm on a sort-of-an-holiday for a few days with my 10" laptop from which i can't save the layouts as image files due to a bug in the software.. :) Every fault you all can find will be fixed by the end of the week...

  3. Crap, I gave up on it when I couldn't get any sound out of it. So, if I take the 100n cap to Q2 collector, I'll be golden? Does the D3 stay where it is?

    1. Yup. That would be a way to go, but it will look a bit silly. The way i would fix it - desolder D3 and the link on the last column on right. Take a new link to where the diode was and place the diode to where the link was (anode to Q2 base, cathode to row 7).
Sucks, but i can't fix the layout at the moment.

    2. That's how I did it, but as Miro said, it looks kind of stupid, also be careful of the cap leads touching the diode leads as mine seemed to just 'want' to brush up against them just to piss me off ;)

    3. That's no worry, all my boards look pretty stupid. And I have seen the natural attraction parts that shouldn't touch seem to have. Thanks guys and miro, get back to your vacation.

    Thanks guys!

    1. I realize you did this update in ancient times but am I to assume the pic above is the fixed one? 12x10 100nF cap in the correct spot going to volume3?

  5. So there is a link directly under diode D3 in the diagram? It's a touch confusing for me as the link is hidden by the diode in the top diagram. I know this is an ultra-noob question, but would be great to get confirmation if someone could spare the time. Thanks guys.
