This pedal originally used large Russian Paper-in-Oil capacitors, and so this layout has been done to accommodate those large caps. If you intend to use smaller caps, then the layout can be easily reduced in size and 3 or 4 of the links can be removed.

Building this after the disappointing OD880 is like stepping out of a tram full of idiots and cruising away in a lamborghini.
I used 630V tubular caps for 100n and 47n, plus silver mica for 120p and a panasonic for 2n2. Axial philips for 47µ of course :) For opamp i used LF353 as the layout suggests. 1N4148 for diodes, as i didn't want to compromise the output level by going mojo with OA91s :)
This here is a real kick ass OD. I recall that Vince recommended it earlier on, but i got around to build just now. Should have built it earlier - i just didn't have all the big caps back then :)

ReplyDeleteIt is indeed an amazing pedal, set for barely break up with my strat it stays always on so far, it does a really nice thing with the eq on the mids - super meaty but defined. and no ts-honk!
still tweaking and waiting for nos diodes and the k40-9 tone cap to arrive. I already have the green k42s in there and I have to say they made a big, BIG difference for the better. Also tried the jrc072bd op amp, but liked the lf353n a lot better. can't wait to swap the latest parts, and I am definately going to build another one.
Last thing: Did anyone play around with diodes yet? I like the 1n914 but have NOS 1s1588 on the way. might have to try the 1n4148s as well. whats the deal with the OA91s ?
btw. do you guys think a different an ultrabright led would suck to much current from the circuit to be noticable?
Did you ever decide on the best diodes? I'm building this next and ordering parts. I would like to keep it as vintage as i can.

ReplyDeleteMost of the dual opamps should work fine. Try on JRC4558, TL072, NE5532 and so on...

My first mojo build :) I reduced 3 columns and 1 row and moved around 2n2 and 47u caps a little but still pretty much stock to lvlark's layout. Tried JRC4558D and LF353 but didn't make much difference in my build. Sounds pretty good. Thanks alot for the layout!!

DeleteI put a socket in like I'm sure most people will with their first version. I personally loved the green 3mm LEDs and bat 41 diodes, however, I clearly messed up in my wiring or something because the bypass signal seemed affected yet when I engage the effect everything works and sounds fine. any ideas?
