Electro Harmonix Frequency Analyzer

Here are two layouts for a classic Ring Modulator.
The first one is for a vintage version (schematic available here).
The DIP version of 1496 had a different pinout.
The second one is for the modern vesion and it could potentially fit in a 125B size box (there is no schematic but a PCB layout here).
Not sure if they have been verified.
You should be able to use Mark's Bipolar Voltage Converter.

  3. Happy new year! What a great addition -- ring mods are one of my favourite effects. Tis one's a bit of a scary size for me just now (and thanks to this site I have a huge build list already) but I'll definitely be tackling it at some point in 2017.

    Is anybody ging to Build this one? I started a board Of the modern version But i cant find a 10uf ceramic cap. If i Use a electrolyt what Would be the right Direction?

    1. That's a bipolar electrolytic cap.
      If you use a polarized cap I think the + side should connect to Blend 1.

  5. What type of i.c. is the 8038? I can't find anything with that code number at my suppliers.

    2. I recently bought 2 on eBay for like 3 euros with Free shipping from ebay. On eBay you'll find a lot of cheapo function generator kits with this chip.

  6. Call it verified! Built the modern version. Sounds very similar to the YT vid i'm surprised to say. Getting some lovely sounds out of this. Great job Alex as always.

    Brent, i think i got my AD633's from Banzai, but i don't remember paying what there charging now.

    1. I should have added that the Blend pot is working backwards so 3 and 1 should be swapped.

    1. Great! One more question, is your AD633 labeled with ANZ or JNZ? Seems there are a few versions out there, and not all are quite the same.

    2. Read the data sheep closer. ANZ and JNZ have same pinout. But there are also JRZ and ARZ, that have a different pinout. Not sure which one this layout is for.

    3. Keep on reading it closer.
      Note that the ones with different pinouts are in SOIC (SMD) package and PDIP (through hole). So the SMD chip is not pin-to-pin compatible with this layout.

  8. Hey! Just wondering what way the 2u2 caps are supposed to go in case you're using bp electrolytics. Anyone?

  10. for a non polarized cap, take two electros of double the value, and tie the cathodes together (-'s)
    after that you can use either anode either way, and you'll get a no polarized cap at the value you need.

  14. Anyone have any luck with the vintage version of this? I managed to get it mostly working by adjusting the pinout of the 4096 to take signal from pin 2 (as in the original schematic), but I'm getting significant carrier wave bleed through the whole thing, even once the input trimmer is perfectly biased. I've tried to adjust the voltages at both the carrier and signal input and I've swapped out 4096s. Any suggestions for getting the 4096 properly balanced?

    1. Sorry, I meant taking the sine wage signal from pin 2 of the 8038 (the layout has it coming out of pin 1).

  15. Any thoughts on modding this with a Hi/Lo range switch for the oscillator, similar to the Fairfield Randy's Revenge to get some trem/vibe sounds out of a lower oscillator range?
