Clay Jones Overdrive

One of the most sought after limited run boutique pedals ever, with them going for over $1500 on eBay, and surprise surprise ..... it was a Tubescreamer that had TGP creaming themselves.  Nothing new there then.

Thanks for the layout Mark, this is definitely on my build list.

  2. Well it is a Tube Screamer and very similar to the Langraff Dynamic Overdrive. I used the JRC44558 and tried various trannys for the input and output stages. The LEDs can be a part of an On/Off/On switch to allow asymmetric 2-to-1 1N914 clipping or diode lifting (OFF) which sounds awesome and a edgy booster.
Anyway this pedal rocks and once our band's guitarist played with it once he didn't wanna give it back.

    Build it and Rock away!

    1. Did you build this from this layout? Should it be tagged?

  3. What could I expect if I use 4148's instead of the leds?

    1. Slightly less compressed and probably little more open distortion.

As this TS-mod goes, i would probably use 1N4001s for it myself :)

  4. you can tag this one. its verified. i was on the fence with this one. i'm not really a tubescreamer guy, but the curiosity of why someone would pay so much for a pedal persuaded me to build it. i'm glad i did. it sounds real nice. i've been playing it with my tele through an old champ turned down low, and man, this thing has some soul! this one is pretty high up on my "to be boxed" list, and worth the build if you ask me

  6. Any NPN will be just fine. Those are just impedance transforming buffers, so they will not affect your tone at all. Try 2N3904. Those should be the cheapest ones around. And it'll sound just as good as the exotic ones.

  7. Carbon resistors? Really? Why?

  8. I have just built this pedal and I am only getting sound when the volume is all the way up. No issues when bypassed. I've checked for unwanted bridges, and checked component location. Never had this issue with a build before. Any suggestions?

    1. Going the issue, 100uf capacitor was off by one position.

AWESOME overdrive! Turns a Deluxe Reverb into a Marshall!
