Ersatz Verben psuedo reverb by culturejam

Designed by culturejam on FSB and CW, this is what he wrote:

Inspired by the Crap-Fi Delay by allesz, I decided to see if a similar simple circuit would work at lower delay times for reverb and slapback. It does.

Once the basic circuit was up and running, earthtones helped me refine it and make it much nicer. He's wicked smaht like that.

Delay time range is about 40ms up to about 140ms. As delay time is increased, more highs are rolled off by C4 (that was ETA's idea). So it's pretty much hiss/noise free no matter the delay time.

He posted a demo here, and it sounds pretty good to me.  Something different to do with those PT2399s you've got.

Geiri's quick demo of his build:

And another clip with 100K as delay pot for longer delay times...:

I realize it. it worked great but now I no longer sound reverb. The knobs seem to work. I mean a regulation in the breath when I turn. One appears to increase the volume of that breath, ... But not the sound you want. Do you have an idea of this defect?

    1. Hello!

it was just that the footswitch was broken

      It works very well !

      Thanks!

  5. Just wondering if anyone knows what dictates the min and max delay time, and whether it could be increased to a longer delay. Worked first time btw, which only seems to happen with your veros

    1. I just answered my own question by chucking on a 100k pot which gets some nice long delays

    2. Cool, what are the repeats like, are the quite lofi?

      Delete
  6. The 100k pot has nice repeats. 250+ starts to get lofi which is nice if your after that sorta thing. Maybe a mod idea is having a pot after the feedback, like a band pass type filter so the repeats filter out. Might have a tinker with that idea n see how it goes. Could slap a lovepedal sticker on there and pass it as my own design. Just kidding

    1. If you add a bandpass filter on there you've spent more R&D time and modded it more than Lovepedal ever have with their pedals! :o)

  7. OK, I just built this one... not sure if my mix and feedback controls are working right. With the feedback down (one repeat), the mix control seems to work fine and goes from all delay, to clean guitar. But once I dial in some feedback, I can never get clean guitar (mix knob then just goes from delay only, to guitar+delay). The feedback knob works, as it adds feedback. Is this the way it is supposed to work, I'll go over the board again tonight for bad cuts/solder bridges or a misplaced component, but before I spend all night wanted to be sure it wasn't just designed that way.

    1. After making the Crap-Fi Delay (which this is based upon) I guess it's supposed to work that way.

It's Tremulator to Verben. Works like a charm and sounds very fat and warm.

  9. Mine works that way. From memory if I turned down the feedback and time knob I'd get a clean signal.

  10. I am getting clean guitar signal even without a battery and the PT23399 removed from the circuit (I am just testing the board without 3pdt switching) and when the PT2399 and battery is there I am getting reverb but the mix and feedback knobs are creating lot of hiss and working only in certain positions and on other positions there is simply the clean signal without reverb.....what could be wrong?

  11. Hi, I'm only getting about 1.5v on the O of the 78L05 - is this correct?

Im getting a clean sound an no delay, so suspect this is the problem?

    1. No that's not right, you should be getting close to 5V at the output

    2. Thank you, I now have it working!

I am only really getting one repeat, is there a way to get more?
The only change I have made is used 100k for Time pot.

      Thanks for all your help!

  12. Hi IVIark, I built two of this, and the first one works just fine. However, in the second attempt, the mix knob seemed to function incorrectly. I suppose the mix knob determines proportion of the dry signal and the delay signal.

If I was right in the first attempt, there should be only the delay when the knob was turned to the left-most while only the dry signal when right-most.

But my second attempt did not work in this way. In the left-most position, there was no dry signal and only the delay signal (the overall volume was low); in the right-most position, there were both dry signal and the delay signal ( the overall volume was louder). It sounded that the delay signal was along with the dry signal, wherever position the mix knob was.

So could you help me out with this problem?I've double checked the circuit and knifed the lines. And the output voltage of 7805 was 4.88.

  13. Built this this week and just fired it up. Works but the effect only kicks in when the FB is crank just short of full. Then, a hair more and it goes almost into oscillation. Going to have to debug this problem before it gets boxed.

  16. Other than that it's a really great sounding circuit! I'm very pleased with mine! And FYI I do all my work on perfboard and trace the layouts! Great work Ivlark! Thanks for all your hard work! And do you have to figure out the layouts or does that software do it? I downloaded it and have trouble using it. I need something that takes a schematic and gives you a PCB layout if possible I'm not good at that manually lol

    1. Auto-routing software tends to cost something like 12000 usd. Yeah. We are drawing these manually.

  17. This sounds great! I substituted a 100k for the 10k and got some long delays (thanks Brad!). I just have to figure out how to get a bit more highs out of the delay signal without going into serious oscillation.

    Great layout Ivark!

    1. Add a 1M resistor from the input to ground, and a 100K resistor from output to ground. That should stop it. The output resistor should be easy enough to add on the board, but for the input there isn't a lot of room there so if you don't want to hang it over diagonally to the space on the ground rail, just add it to the stomp switch.

    2. Oh man. I've got a wrong connection between ground and input and output. Now i've got no problems. Sorry.

  22. Is anyone else having problems with distortion from this circuit? I built one on it's own board & it worked absolutely perfectly. But now I've built a new one on a board with a Theremin & the delays are very very distorted. Can't find any faults with the build & all tracks between the Theremin & delay are broken.

  23. . I'm getting no dry or delayed signal but at a extreme settings I get oscillation of internal noise. I think the signal just isn't getting to the pt. my voltages are as follows:
    I 9.1
    G 0
    O 4.95

    1- 4.92
    2- 2.45
    3- 0
    4- 0
    5- 3.6
    62.4
    7 3.9
    8 3.9
    9 2.45
    10 2.45
    11 2.4
    12 2.45
    13 2.45
    14 2.45
    15 2.45
    16 2.45
    I built the same layout
Does the dry signal come in to pin 16 or is there somewhere else I should look for where the signal is getting broken?

  24. nice pedal. Just buildt it. But do you think the feedback control might be better with a diffrent poti than 250K? Maybe a like 200k or 150k? May problem is, that I have to turn it up almost to the max to get the slapback sounds.

  27. I built this circuit with a momentary switch to get the infinite repeats. One lug of the switch to a 22k resistor then to fb2. The other side of the switch to fb3. It sounds pretty sweet I tried it without the resistor but it would self oscillate to bad with the feedback pot in the right setting the sustained note is at unity it sounds pretty cool

  34. Built this (with 100K for longer delay) and boxed it up but disappointed in the end because there's considerable volume loss with the pedal engaged. Also it randomly (?) goes into crazy screechy oscillation at times.

  36. i have problem with FB when i go max it have a crank sound non stop.

  37. Im getting the same Sharpy. Just dont crank the feedback to the max. It regulates how much of the signal gets fed back into the loop. Turning it all the way means most of your signal gets repeated which would be the sound equivalent of a mirrored hall, it just repeats itself infinitely.

I just build this one, sounds great . I used a dpdt switch to connect a resistor in series with lugs 1&2 of the time pot. (found out this doesnt changes the resistance on lug 3, so it doesnt affects its interaction with the bottom row (13) of the vero. The pot is 100k nominally but actually gets 107k. One side has a 27kohm resistor and the other a 120k. Middle position is off. So I get:

    Position 1 (top, 107k + 27k) I get 0-21k = 276ms
    Position 3 (bottom 107k + 120k) 0-56k = 670ms
    Position 2 (middle 107k only) 0-107k = 1255ms

Formula is (11.46 + Resistance in Kohms) + 29.7 = Delay times in ms, which I took from Electric Druid's useful equations for the PT2399.

In all Im very satisfied. I housed it in a bare 125b for now.

  40. My 2 cents on this puppy.... Change the voltage regulator to a L7806 for better faux verb. 2399 data sheet says you can go to 6.5V... on fx forums I have seen people push it up to 7.5v for even better slow stuff. 6v worked better than 5v when I cooked one up. Change the 22nf cap to 15nf or 10nf (lower=more highs) to to make it brighter and not so dark. I did the feed at B50k like a deep blue delay, B25k for the time pot sweeps nice half way it goes to self osc.

  41. Hi guys. I just built this but i had no 100n capacitors left. I used 150n instead, the whole thing works but the delayed signal distorts like madness. the longer the delay time the more distortion. Could this be my silly attempt to replace the caps? I don't understand the 2399 so I'm sorry for the silly question. I already tried a different 2399.

    1. put capacitors at 100n and everything will be fine. Yesterday I collected this project with a potentiometer at 100K, everything works wonderfully. But there is noise when time increases. To remove it, attach a green light-emitting diode to the 7th leg of the IC. The cathode of which is fixed to the ground. Sorry for my bad english))

      Delete
    2. Thanks for the answer. Today I replaced the caps except for the input / output and now there is no more distortion. Yay. Sounds pretty good. The mix control acts a little strange but its alright. Noisy is true, so i'll try that. Interesting, why led?

      Delete
    3. That LED on pin 7 is a current limiter. It stops the signal from getting beyond ~1.7V peak to peak inside a chip that runs on 5V. The distortion has more to do with the chip itself, I think.

      Delete
  42. Yes you are right! Completely remove the noise will not work because of the features of the chip. But the result will be a little better anyway.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Initially, 2399 is not designed for such a long delay, if you use a 100K potentiometer (time). For normal operation with a long delay, you need to use two 2399. If you use 1K (time), as in the original circuit, there is no noise, because this will be the normal operating mode of the chip. once again, sorry for my bad english))

  43. First pedal that worked right away, pretty happy with the result, it eats a little bit of the highs though.
Made it with a switch that puts a 10K resistor in front of leg 1 of the time-pot, so it actually doubles the time value.<

  45. I was just about to comment asking for help on why I was getting no clean signal and realised it was my terrible soldering on the mix pot!

  46. Hope someone can help me. I added this modulation add on board http://tagboardeffects.blogspot.com/2014/04/grind-customs-fx-deprofundis-delay.html with a NSL-32 to this circuit. I connected it to time 1 and time 3 as time 2 is grounded. I hear the modulation but the time knob doesn't seem to have much of a range. Any suggestions?
